1955 Ford Thunderbird Hop in and take a ride down memory lane. In 1955 Eisenhower was President. James Dean was on the big screen. Sinatra was on the radio and Ford launched the sleek two seater luxury convertible which became known as the iconic Thunderbird. In 1954 Ford introduced the Thunderbird to the world at the Detroit Auto Show. It was marketed as a two door roadster with a focus on modern comforts, convenience, as well as performance and handling. The car was an instant hit, public orders totaled more than 3,500 units within the first 10 day selling period. At the time Ford had only planned to produce 10,000 units...due to demand it ended up selling 16,155 Thunderbirds in 1955. Motor Trends editor, Don McDonald wrote of the Thunderbird, ?Perhaps the most outstanding feature of the new Ford Thunderbird is the clever wedding of sports car functionalism with American standards of comfort,? ?The 55? T-Bird went on to be nicknamed the ?baby t-bird? due to it being one of the smallest t-bird?s in comparison to the t-bird models that followed. The t-bird offered here has been well cared for and has been in South Carolina since 2002.The prior owner had the car for 17 years and in that time spent a considerable amount of money refurbishing the various mechanicals and cosmetics.The paint and body would be considered an older restoration but presents well.The car is not a 100 point concours car but is a very respectable driver and would certainly be suitable for local car shows or cars and coffee events. The car runs and drives and stops great and the 3SPD (with overdrive) manual transmission shifts nicely.
