| Beetle was sold new in Olympia, WA to original owner who kept it for about 40 years and sold as a basket case. Second owner spent years and $$$ restoring it to better than new. The restoration was a pan-off effort that included new Wolfsburg West floor pans. The convertible top and frame cost 3x the cost of the vehicle when new. The entire convertible frame was shipped to Chucks Convertibles on the East Coast and re-built and then fitted with the best canvas top.I have extensive photos of the restoration and the color-sanding.A new motor (not the original) was installed in 2018 by Kombi Haus in Sacramento, CA. Subsequently, an electronic ignition (Petronix) and short-throw shifter (Vintage Speed) was installed. The Front Axle was converted to Disc Brakes and its own Reservoir during restoration.Also in 2018, the car was dismantled to allow for color sanding the body panels. The paint job was about 5 years old at the time and because of many coats of clear top coat, had some rather pronounced orange-peel in several areas, especially the bolt on parts. At the time of the color sanding, new beading and ss hardware was used to replace fenders.If you know your VWs you probably spotted the 1966 rims (first year of the slotted rims) and matching hub caps. The original restorer opted for the blade bumpers and filled in the holes for the original towel-bar bumper struts. | |
