CAR DESCRIPTION FROM SELLER
We purchased this project as a barn find /rescue. It seemed too good an example of a late 70s FJ to let rot in a field of wasps. Or in a field of grass with a ton of wasps! (We are an automotive restoration shop in Austin, TX. The owner has 35 years of experience in repairing and restoring old, and odd, vehicles. We have a great staff of equally experienced mechanics, fabricators, and body and paint folks.)The odometer tells us the FJ has 94102 miles on it and this seems reasonable.Although the body was in great shape, we did have to attend to the chassis and drive-train. For example, we found we needed to rebuild the engine. It was run with low or no oil at sometime, which is probably why it was parked. We were told it ran when it was parked...The original F2 engine was professionally rebuilt with a new cam, bearings, pistons (0.020 oversized), oil pump, water pump, etc. All the paperwork regarding the rebuild is included. While the engine was being done, we did the following:Installed:-New clutch plate and clutch master cylinder-New brake master cylinder. The wheel brake cylinders were in good shape.-New front shocks-New wheel bearings and seals-New front suspension bushings-New fuel sender. The gas tank was thoroughly cleaned.Also:-Carburetor was restored by a well known FJ carburetor fellow in FL.-Rebuilt the starter-Rebuilt the alternator-Converted the ignition system to an HEI distributor/ignition (the original electronic ignition system was shot, and replacement parts were very expensive)-Cleaned and pressure tested the radiator-Inspected the transmission, transfer case and differential. All were flushed and new fluids added.-Cleaned, inspected, and repaired (where necessary) all other engine related components.-Generally cleaned up the engine compartment, including some repainting. The chassis is in very good condition. The frame is straight and has only surface corrosion. As already stated, the suspension has been re-furbished were required. The steering box and all linkages are in great shape. Mechanically the vehicle is well sorted. It runs and drives very well. It shifts easily, accelerates smoothly, steers well, and brakes straight. All the gauges and lights work as they should. The ashtray was not tested. The body is in fantastic shape for an FJ of this age. The floor pans are solid, as are the rockers, fenders, etc. There is some corrosion on the bottom of the doors. The driver’s side rear corner has a small dent. Sometime in the past the vehicle was repainted black. Unfortunately, it was done in a less than professional manner. It looks fine from 15 yards. The original color is the desert tan, which can still be found in the engine compartment. All the window glass and window seals are in very good condition. We suspect the seals were replaced during the “repaint”.The rear brake/parking lenses are pretty worn, as are the front parking/signal lenses. If the new owner wants to keep the vehicle original, these are readily available. The car is also missing the passenger’s side door mirror. The interior is spartan, as all FJ40s were. The original front seats were removed at some time, and different seats installed. We don’t like the look of these seats, but to each their own. Luckily, we have the original seats, and they are included. They need recovering. The original rear jump-seats are in good shape.Paint and interior were left as-is so the new owner could choose a color, upholstery and trim that best suits them. This FJ is ready for the backwoods or dessert arroyos near you. If the new owner wants, we can refurbish the interior and exterior of the vehicle to its original condition, with owner chosen colors and final finishes.
