| 1978 Mercedes-Benz 450 SL with 40,000 original miles! I purchased this car from the original owner's grandson. It has lived it's entire life in dry Las Vegas, Nevada. In over 42 years this car amassed just 40k miles! That's about 952 miles a year. This car was used, but not abused during the owners lifetime. This car is straight as an arrow, without signs of accident or impact. And it has ZERO RUST, owing to the warm and dry desert climate of Nevada. Unfortunately, the elderly owner passed away a few years ago (he was a Mercedes-Benz lover and collector) and the car was improperly stored in the heat of Las Vegas and sat unused. The heat worked on the car, creating dash cracks and interior seat damage (*see photos).Ultimately, the Grandson had the car painted (Correct Mercedes-Benz stock color #504 'English Red') as well as the wheels. New tires replaced the cracked and aged set. But that's where he stopped. The car has a number of cosmetic flaws (*see photos) which need TLC. Seats have damage, dash has damage, console wood has been re-stained/coated, but poorly. Repaint is "driver quality" without noticeable overspray, but orange peel in certain areas and heat damage and flaking of original paint.The engine starts up and hums great---I have videos of it running and put it through higher revs that I can share with interested buyers. Remember, this is just a 40k mile engine of a world class car famous for being absolutely bulletproof and these MB V-8 engines are known to go many hundred of thousands of miles without issue. This engine is a young machine, with years of reliable service ahead.However, engine needs some love, by way of hoses, belts, tune service, etc. There is also a fuel leak that needs addressing---hose cracked. The fact that this car starts right up and the engine purrs is a GREAT SIGN that it's just wants/needs some care---but not major mechanical rebuild etc.I had purchased this car with the intention of having a dry, straight, low mileage class SL Series Roadster----but one that I could use daily and give some love to allow it to serve for the years ahead.I love saving these classic machines, having owned numerous Benz's (from both driver quality examples as well as high level show cars) over the years. It's a bit of a "labor of love" for me, and I do get enjoyment of getting these cars back on the road, where they deserve to be.I was prepared to buy a dash cover over the current dash, replace the console wood cover, clean the seats (there is a little mildew staining, just needs cleaning) and add some Coco Mats to the floor as well as buy some good seat covers. Mercedes-Benz 450 SL parts and accessories are easy to source, FYI. AC blows cold, too! Exterior-wise I was going to replace the front window as it is cracked. Hard top and convertible top are rock solid.In short, this is the car for someone that wants to score a LOW MILEAGE, DRY MERCEDES-BENZ 450SL DRIVER THAT NEEDS SOME ATTENTION AND IS NOT AFRAID TO TACKLE SOME SMALL COSMETIC RESTORATION AND MECHANICAL SERVICING. For the right person, this car represents a fun project and the sense of "saving a diamond in the rough" and making it a cruising jewel for loads of classic Mercedes Benz enjoyment. Of course, this car would also be a delightful base for a full scale restoration, if that's you aim.I have decided to pass this car along, as I have a number of classics needing my attention, and like so many, the last few months have created some financial strain, hence the sale.
