CAR DESCRIPTION FROM SELLER
The 1957Ford Thunderbird convertible attracts morecollectors and increases in value with every passing year. Introduced in 1955, Ford marketed the T-Bird as an upscale competitor to Chevy’s Corvette and to recently imported Europeantwo-seaters favored by Americans. Although T-Bird models produced in 1955 and 1956 were popular, Ford reworkedthe 1957 to capture a larger share of the two-seater market. For the 1957 model, the designers adopted an aggressive, aerodynamic lookthat put the T-Bird’s body design in a class by itself. New sweeping bodypanels (the 1957 stretched 6.1 inches longer than the 1956) ended with enlarged, round tail lights resembling the intakes on jet engines. On theselights, Ford placed chromed thruster bezels that reinforced the resemblance to jetturbines. Ford accentuated the rearfenders with fins that angled up and outward as would wings on a rocket. On the sides of the removable hardtop, Ford installedrocket ship inspired portholes. Also, the front bumper was reshaped, allowingfor a larger grill, and the rear bumper was reimagined. In the interior, the instrument panel sawsignificant updates. Round gauges wereplaced in dash that covered from on door to the other and that was made ofmachined aluminum like that found in military aircraft. Single-color interiorscomplimented the new streamlined exteriors. With its new taillights, fins, portholes and aerodynamic silhouette, the 1957 T-Bird became far more desirablethan its 1955 and 1956 predecessors. Infact, the increased sales numbers made the 1957 one of the most storiednameplates in Ford’s history. The unique allure of the iconic 1957 T-Bird continuesto grow because of its scarcity. Only 21,380 T-Birds were made that year, and manyare already off the road. Inaddition to aggressive design changes, for 1957 Ford improved the engineering forthe T-Bird making it a serious performance car. Ford made the 1957 the most powerful T-Birdever by introducing the 5.1-liter V-8 engine, known as the Thunderbird V8. This car, easily identified as a D Codemodel, distinguishable via the D at the beginning of the VIN number, Ford poweredwith the iconic 312 cubic-inch, stout Y-Block, OHV V8 that produces 245 horsepower. This engine was introduced in 1956 became iconic because its reliabilitycaused Ford to keep it as a high-end option well into the mid-1970s. Tocounteract the effects of the added ponies, Ford outfitted the 1957 withimproved hydraulic drum brakes, revised spring rates, and the chassis crossmembers were stiffer than in 1956 and 1957. The suspension was independent upfront with unequal A-arms and coil springs while a live axle resided at therear with semi-elliptic leaf springs connected to it. Connecting the engine tothe differential is the 1957 version of Ford's first automatic transmissionwhich was referred to as the Ford-O-Matic. This transmission was designed byBorg-Warner and would become the platform from which many later model automatictransmissions would evolve. Developed as a three-speed automatic, theFord-O-Matic used a cast-iron case and would normally be started in secondgear. This 1957T-Bird retains its original heritage—the hallmark of valuable T-Birds from 1957. It wasnot restored. However, its owners maintained it well. For most of its life it was garagekept and driven infrequently. When the currentowner added it to his collection in 2003 and Virginia issued the Antique Vehicle license tag. At thetime, the odometer read 73,609 miles. Today and 17 years later, the odometer reads 79,727 miles. The currentowner drove it less than 360 miles a year. The car’s appearancereflects the care it received. Even though it is 63 years new, the chrome bumpers are original, as are the Thunderbirdhubcaps, and almost all the chrome trim on the body. The grill shows badgessignifying the owner’s membership in the International Classic Thunderbird Cluband the recognition from the Golden Jubilee year of the Antique Automotive Clubof America. In about 2001, the entirecar was repainted in its original color, Torch Red. Ford painted its early T-Birds with lacquerthat, after about 20 years, developed check marks. Repainting kept this T-Bird’s body in betterthan average condition. The back quarter panels are fitted with originalfender skirts that have chrome trimming on their lowers. The remainder ofthis T-Bird looks as would a well maintain original car in any privatecollection. The engine block is still the original red color, the round chromecover to the carburetor shines, and the artfully finned Thunderbird valvecovers are topped with Ford’s Thunderbird trademark design. The inside of thetrunk is clean and covered with the original sporty plaid mat. The 1957 trim lines are highlighted by newerwide whitewall tires, like those that were stock. Thisconvertible comes with two tops: the optional factory hardtop painted ColonialWhite that is decorated with the optional factory portholes. And, it has a black convertible soft top, that needs repair or possibly replacement. Theinterior—believed original—has very little wear and still looks amazing, including the Ford emblems, instrument trim, door handles, etc. Overall thestyle is sporty because of the machine-turned, aluminum panels that flow acrossthe dash and onto the doors. It still has both wing windows. One was cracked. Even so, it is an amazing 50’s interior thatshows incredibly well. In the center ofdash sits the original T-Bird Town and Country, push button styled AMradio. The red bench seat is draped withpleated Colonial Vinyl. Also, this carhas features that were extras on most other mid-1950s cars, like powersteering, power brakes, an electronic ignition, and a transmission cooler. In thewords of a Thunderbird connoisseur and expert, Dan Jedlicka, it is oftenimpossible to match an original.
