CAR DESCRIPTION FROM SELLER
Basics:1972 LeMans, 467 Pontiac engine, overdrive auto transmission, aftermarket suspension, original colors. I bought this car in 1995, drove it for 2 years, and parked it after a deer incident. It was stored inside until restoration/rebuild in 2012. The colors are Brasilia Gold with Sandalwood vinyl top and Sandalwood interior.Body:Very solid 2 door hardtop, restored in 2012. The only rust repair was a patch between the rear window and trunk, under the vinyl top. A replacement fender was installed, and the door was straightened to correct the damage from 1996. One body modification was to install 72 GTO fender vents instead of the ‘LeMans’ script emblems behind the front wheels. The other body modification was to paint the panels under the bumpers body color (the front panel was originally chrome and the rear panel was brown plastic). The car was originally an A/C car, with tinted windshield and clear side and back glass. A new windshield was installed during the restoration. The air conditioning was not installed upon restoration. The door hinges were in good condition, and did not need to be rebuilt. The rear bumper was straightened in 1995 to remove a dent and rechromed at that time. The front bumper and grilles are original and in good condition.......................................................................................................................................................................................................Drivetrain: The original 350 2bbl engine was replaced with a 400 block. The original 3 speed automatic was replaced with a 4-speed overdrive transmission. The original 10 bolt rear end was replaced with a 12 bolt rear axle. The short block was sourced from Butler Performance. They provided a ‘XX’ casting 400 block, bored .060 over. Forged Ross pistons (flat top), and eagle forged steel crank, eagle 6.7” rods, total seal gapless rings, and required bearings were also supplied. The rings were gapped and final assembly was performed by the owner. The heads were sourced from SD Performance. They are Kaufman castings, CNC ported to 290 CFM. SD Performance also supplied their ‘Old Faithful’ cam (236/245 @.050”), a port matched Edelbrock Performer RPM intake, roller rocker arms, and a windage tray. Modified rocker arm lock nuts allow the use of factory valve covers. Additional parts in the engine build include a Canton 6-quart oil pan (and matching pickup), Cometic MLS head gaskets, and a double roller timing chain. An aluminum water pump, Davis HEI distributor, and Crane spark plug wires was used during the final assembly. The engine was painted in original Pontiac blue (sourced from Butler Performance), and ARP stainless fasteners were used. The engine was assembled with a Quadrajet (replaced with fuel injection at a later date), tri-Y headers, and broken in on a dyno. Two dyno runs were performed to confirm that all cylinders were firing properly, but no timing or fuel adjustments were made. 495 hp was the recorded power in this non-optimized state. When the engine was installed in the car, a custom oil system was installed. The block mounted oil filter was removed, and a Canton oil filter was installed under the car. Plumbing and a check valve were used to install a 2-quart Canton accumulator in the trunk. The accumulator is wired with a toggle switch under the dashboard, and this allows the engine to be pre-lubed before startup. An original dual snorkel air cleaner was modified by removing the actuators from the snorkels. The vent tube was modified to fit the taller intake manifold and to center the snorkels on the engine......................................................................................................................................................................................The transmission was sourced from Phoenix Transmissions, and is their SX level of 700R4 transmission. This transmission is programmed internally to lock up the converter at the same time as shifting into 4th gear. The converter has an approximate 2400 rpm stall speed. The transmission is filled with Red Line D4 synthetic ATF. An air-to-oil cooler is plumbed in line with a cooler in the radiator. A Lokar dipstick and TV cable is used. An aluminum driveshaft was custom built at Denny’s Driveshaft. The rear axle was originally from a 1970 Chevelle. It was rebuilt with new bearings, a 3.73 gear set, a Tru-Trac limited slip unit, and Superior one-piece axles. The axle is filled with Red Line synthetic gear lube. There is a very slight whine from 45-50 mph, but no vibrations are present. The Tri-Y headers were sourced from Tribal Tubes. They were coated with cast-iron colored ceramic coating, but this quickly failed and the headers are now rust covered. One tube needed to be relieved to clear the frame on the driver side of the car. A 3”, oval-tube, x-pipe exhaust kit was purchased from Ram Air restorations. This kit was installed with custom hangers and Xlerator mufflers and 2-1/2” tail pipes. The exhaust system is finished with trans-am style polished stainless tips. The entire exhaust after the headers was painted with Eastwood stainless steel coating. Some light rust is present on the exhaust system, but it looks nice at a casual glance. The exhaust has a nice tone at idle. There are some speeds that resonance is present, especially with the windows up (40-45 mph is the loudest speed). In 2017 fuel injection was installed. A new tank, fuel pump, and throttle body kit was purchased from Holley. This is the Sniper kit, and the throttle body is factory looking gold. The pump is in-tank, and rubber hose and push-lock fittings were used for the installation. This self-learning fuel injection system has no control boxes mounted in the engine compartment, and is difficult to notice that a non-stock system is used. The small display for the fuel injection system is mounted on the console under the dashboard. With the fuel injection system, the car starts quickly and runs well. The transmission shifts well, and the car is easy to drive....................................................................................................................................................................................................... Interior This was originally a bench seat, column shift car. A factory console, shifter, and bucket seats were installed. The shifter was modified for the 4 speed automatic. A non-tilt steering column was installed, and the factory steering wheel remains. The original rear seat was retained. Original fabric and reproduction vinyl were used to recover the seats. Rather than GTO style vinyl seats, fabric inserts were made for the seating areas. A new headliner was installed, but the shoulder belts were not installed. These are in storage. The original door panels and dash pad were reused. Factory optional gages were acquired and restored. The odometer was set to the same mileage as the original gage cluster. I cannot be positive that the mileage is original, but the odometer reads 52,xxx miles. It is my opinion that this mileage is original....................................................................................................................................................................................................Suspension/Brakes/Wheels The front suspension retains stock style control arms and crossmember. SPC control arms are used, and the upper arms are adjustable for alignment purposes. No shims are used to mount the upper control arms, and the bolts are installed with the heads toward the engine for additional header clearance. The stock spindles are used, and extra tall ball joints were sourced from Savitske Performance. A hellwig tubular antisway bar is used in front, and Global West springs are used (with ½ coil removed). Koni shocks are used, painted black. The lower control arms are from SPC and have adjustment shims under the springs to set the ride height. The original steering box was rebuilt with the fast ratio gearset installed. Rear suspension is factory style triangulated 4 link. Spohn Performance chrome moly control arms are used, and the upper arms are adjustable for setting pinion angle. All arms have greasable joints on the axle end. A spohn performance adjustable anti-sway bar is used, and the ends of this are mounted to the chassis, not the lower control arms. Global West 2” lowering springs are used in the rear along with Koni shocks. Braking is by a factory pedal and power booster and a wilwood master cylinder. Front brakes are 6 piston calipers with 12.2” rotors on aluminum hubs. Rear brakes are 4 piston calipers and 11” rotors. The rear kit has an integral parking brake that uses the factory parking brake pedal. An electric vacuum pump was installed for the brake booster. Wheels are US Mag Rambler aluminum, 17x8 front and 18x8 rear. Tires are Nitto 555, 245/45R17 front and 265/50R18 rear..................................................................................................................................................................................................... This is a nice car that drives very well. There is sufficient ground clearance that there are not issues with speed bumps or driveways, and the suspension is compliant enough that potholes and bumps are not a problem.
