This car utilized a revolutionary backbone box frame underneath a beautiful GRP (glass reinforced plastic) body and powered by a new dual overhead cam motor. The result was a perfectly proportioned sports car that was light, fast, durable, and affordable. Tipping the scales at just over 1,500 pounds and well over 130hp, this is one of the most exciting vintage car driving experiences that is still relatively affordable. There were a total of around 9,000 Elans built world-wide from 1962 to 1973, and of those, 2,650 were S3s. However, the Elan registry estimates around only 1,100 total Elans from all years across the globe remain. The early owner (if not possibly the first owner) lived in Florida. After owning the car for decades, he decided to try and restore it himself. The project stalled out and it sat for a long time before he eventual sold it to Hayes Harris, owner of Wire Wheel in Vero Beach, Florida sometime in the late 90’s to early 2000’s. With the help of Dave Bean from Dave Bean Engineering, a full restoration down to the frame was performed. As it neared completion in December of 2004, a San Diego British car enthusiast purchased the car and had them finish the interior with a custom tan interior so it would be more comfortable on sunny SoCal days. The restoration was a frame off complete build (see archive pics taken by builder). Many parts were replaced in addition to saving as many good original parts as possible. When he purchased the car it had 18,500 miles on the odometer and it is believed to be original. This owner enjoyed the car for 15-years. He added nearly 40,000 miles and was very active in the local Southern California British car scene. He competed for years at the San Diego British Day car show and won Best in Class for Lotus Cars in 2012, 2014, 2017, and 2018. During his ownership, he further improved the car with the follow items and services:Bespoke color interiorPrestige Hardwood burl walnut dashOriginal S3 full tonneau coverTop end engine rebuild by Bill Schlossnagel (Oct of 2018 / 1,500 miles ago) Bill was machinist as well as part of the US Lotus Team Complete head work Port and polished New SS oversized valves Bronze valve guides Valves and heads last checked on 5/27/19Rare 3:91 differential (original optional 3:77 differential included)Panasport wheels (original steel wheels w/baby moon caps included)JAE CV joint axlesK&N remote cold air filter (original air filter housing included)Bean Engineering water pump cartridgeRD Enterprises hi torque gear reduction starterRD Enterprises alternator (original Lucas generator included)Pertronix ignitionBean Engineering pressure plate and 8.5” clutch – heavy dutyExhaust headersBean Engineering differential strengthening braceRD Enterprises electric cooling fan auto switch w/manual overrideFull major service and tune up (10/18) Weber carburetors disassembled and cleaned New jets installed Carbs synchronized/tuned New spark plugs New belts and hoses All fluids drained and renewedLast oil service (5/27/19 less than 500 miles ago)Lotus floor matsLotus tire air valve capsThis Lotus is in excellent condition considering the age. The fragile fiberglass body shows minimal signs of use with a few professional touched up chips and superficial cracks. All the lenses and trim also look very presentable as well as original. All the exterior lights appear to work. The original window frames show some light scratching from use, but are also in very good condition. All the glass is original, including the windshield, and are wearing the proper factory stampings. The windshield shows some light rash and a few scratches from 57k miles and 53-years of use. The Panasport wheels look great and are in near new condition with no curb rashes. They are wearing Toyo 13” tires that were installed new in 2015. They have no cracks or signs of age and have well over 60% life remaining. The interior is also quite nice for the age/miles. The seats are in good shape with some stitching coming lose and some seam separation on the driver seat. The door panels are in excellent shape as is the headliner of the soft top. The tan carpet shows some areas of wear with minor staining and the glue coming loose near the footwell areas. The floor mats are in near new condition. The burl wood dash looks great with a split on the dash top pad. All the gauges appear to work as well as the interior lights. The electric windows and horn also work well. The soft top and frame appear to be original and in good shape with no tears or other issues. The full tonneau fits nicely as well as the original small tonneau. This Elan starts easily on the first try and has a surprisingly healthy exhaust note. There is no smoking at start up and it holds a smooth idle. Power is immediate and you feel incredibly connected to the road. It pulls hard throughout the rev range and the redline approaches almost too quickly. The steering is probably one of the best of the era. It’s as if the tires are in the palm of your hands and you can change direction with a slight flick of the wrist. The brakes are almost overkill for how small the car is. It stops with ease by just applying slight pressure with your big toe. They are incredibly easy to modulate and probably one of the easier cars to trail brake. The shifting is notchy and precise. You definitely know when you’re in gear. There is no slipping of the clutch. Even for larger folks, it’s surprisingly comfortable to drive whether you are simply cruising or terrorizing your local back roads. This Elan has a clean and clear California title and is exempt from CA smog testing. This Lotus includes an original workshop manual, extra key, spare wheel with older Pirelli tire, original wheels with newer tires, original hub caps, 3 car show awards, original owner’s manual, original starter, original alternator, original airbox, original differential, original axle parts, and other small misc. items. **Note: VIN and other numbers withheld to protect against fraud.
