This car has been in my SD collection since 1998The SD-455 was more than a specially tuned version of the "standard" 455, the SD-455 was unique in nearly every way, starting with stronger reinforced four bolt main cylinder block, special enlarged round port cylinder heads, a unique camshaft, high pressure oiling system topped of with a 800cfm quadrajet carburetor. It's "conservative" rating of 290hp and 395 ft-lbs of torque offered real-world performance comparable to muscle cars just a few years earlier. It was only offered from mid 1973 through 1974; only 1195 were built - 252 in 1973 and 943 in 1974The end of the SD-455 came too quickly for true enthusiasts. A delayed spring 1973 release squeezed the production run by nearly half a year but Pontiac knew from the start that this special engine would not live beyond 1974, but it would be one hell of a ride while it lasted. The SD Trans Am is considered "The last muscle car to leave the party"Trans Am's are hot right now and Super Duty's are on the list of the ten fastest muscle cars of all time.
