CAR DESCRIPTION FROM SELLER
Mercury Monterey . 1953 Mercury Monterey, modified flathead V8, three speed with overdrive transmission. This Mercury was built in San Jose, California and sold new in San Diego, I have the original bill of sale. Absolutely no rust in this car! It was completely rebuilt over a seven year period. It was a body on rebuild, converted to ball joints front suspension, front disc power brakes. The original flathead was rebuilt and modified, at the time, Motor City Flathead was in business, Mark Kirby was the owner, he coached me on how to build this engine as well as selling the parts. It has stainless steel valves, 3/4 race cam and balanced to name just a few things that were done. I’m running a 390 cfm four barrel carburetor with MSD ignition. The three speed transmission was rebuilt and the overdrive converted to 12v. Body and paint done by Bobby Dale well known Ferrari restorer. The tuck and roll interior was done by Eddy Martinez who has won many awards over the years and is well known on the west coast. All the glass is original except the windshield. All chrome re-plated, all stainless polished. It has the rare driving lights integrated into the front bumper. Originally this Mercury had roll up windows but I covered to power window using the original Mercury mechanisms, nothing after market. In order to keep the dash looking stock, I came up with a way to hide an Alpine stereo behind the original speaker grill. I designed a momentary switch so that when you turn the volume knob on the original radio the speaker grill opens to reveal the Alpine. It also has a five CD changer in the trunk, and the trunk is upholstered to match the interior. It has been converted to electric wipers. The accessory Mercury steering wheel was restored and color matched to the interior at great expense. It has real Halibrand wheels with Goodyear tires.I built this car when I lived and worked in Southern California, I retired and came back to my home state of Oklahoma and that is where the car resides now. I never intended to sell my Mercury so no expense was spared in its restoration, priorities change as I’ve gotten older and the decision to sell has been a difficult one. I know I will never get back the money I put into this car, so the money I want for it is far below my investment. That being said, I’m not desperate either. This is a beautiful car that is not that common, and is worthy of a good home for someone to enjoy. I have many pictures taken during its restoration and will happily share them if someone is interested. Feel free to contact me if you have further questions or want additional pictures of my Mercury.
