Here is the story on this car: My father and I bought new 1977 280Z’s. I bought a silver2+2 he bought the blue coupe. The awful bad quality clear coat Datsun usedstarted to fade and peal with in 4 years. Datsun should have had to repaint allthose cars then very common problem but past any warranty. My father paid$7,844.00 new for his in 1977. He kept it in the garage most all of its life. My parents always kept a journal of every tank of gas they put in all their cars starting with a new 1953 Fordsedan. The first gas fill in this car was 4/18/1977 with 325 miles on the speedometer 13.2 gallons 62.9 cents a gallon $8.30 for the fill up. The last gas fill recorded was 9/30/94 with 83,619 miles on the car. The mileage today is 84,425. My parents quit driving the Z mainly because it wasn’t comfortable anymore and opted to use the Ford F250. It sat in the garage where dad would start it up every now and then and drive it down the road. So about 800 miles put on in 19 years from 1994 to 2015. It sat mostly in the garage during this time. My mom dies in 2014 and Dad followed in 2015. After settling the estate in 2017 I thought I should get the old Z running and restore it. I am now older than my parents when they quit driving it and find I don’t have the time or the desire to restore it. Here is what I did in 2020 I had a complete brake job and new tires put on the car, fluids changed and some misc new parts. Here is what I know. The car drives and runs nice for about 20 minutes plenty of power as you can see in my video. Then it will start to act like it isn’t getting anyfuel and will not run. After it sits for about 20 minutes it will fire right back up and you are good to go and runs like it should until it doesn’t. My father had a problem with the fill tube rusting out in the gas tank. This was bi-passed as you can see in my video. I’m no mechanic but my suspicion is the gas tank is the problem. From Google I found that 280Z in that era had a common rust problem with their gas tanks. Small body damage driver side tail light area, small dent scratch front bumper. All gauges work except the gas gauge will only go to ¼ of tank even when tank is full. This is all I know to the best of my knowledge and personal experience with this car.
