FRAME OFF, ROTISSERIE RESTORATIONREBUILT, NUMBERS MATCHING 400 ENGINEREBUILT, NUMBERS MATCHING FOUR-SPEED TRANSMISSIONBEAUTIFULLY RESTORED FACTORY SADDLE INTERIORBRAND NEW, MIRROR FINISH 1970 GTO CARDINAL RED BASE COAT/CLEAR COAT PAINTYou are looking at a beautifully restored 1970 GTO. This amazing car was a perfect candidate for restoration with its original numbers matching 400 and 4-speed with AC. The car was found right here in Arizona and was completely rust free.SUMMARY:I’ll start out with a summary, and if you’re interested, the details are listed below. This GTO has just finished a 5 year frame off, rotisserie restoration. During that time the body was soda blasted down to the factory, rust free sheet metal, primed and blocked several times, painted using high quality Sherwin and Williams base/clear paint, and then color sanded to a mirror finish. The Judge appearance package was added which includes stripes, decals, front & rear spoilers, hood tach, and a functional Ram Air hood. The numbers matching engine and heads were completely rebuilt with the addition of a 274XE Comp cam and Ram Air III exhaust manifolds. New factory style 2 ¼” dual exhaust with Flowmasters were added to give it that healthy muscle car sound. The suspension and steering were all rebuilt with the addition of 2” lowering springs all around. The frame, suspension, inner fender wells, core support, drive shaft, and many other pieces were sandblasted and powder coated. The underside of this GTO is painted in the same base/clear paint as the top. The factory 255 Saddle interior was restored back to original. This car is absolutely gorgeous. It starts with ease, shifts smoothly and is a blast to drive. Needless to say, it turns heads and gets thumbs up wherever it goes. The Ram Air setup, factory AC, windshield washer bottle and all the correct decals. The inner fender wells were powder coated black, and all the factory wiring harnesses were stripped, repaired, and re-wrapped using factory style friction tape. The only things that deviate from stock are the red firewall and HEI distributor. A new high performance aluminum radiator (painted black) was installed along with the factory heavy duty clutch fan and shroud. Even here in Arizona this car always runs about 190 degrees. The original numbers matching 400 was disassembled and completely rebuilt. The block was bored .030 over and the crank was turned .010 under. All new pistons, rings, bearings, oil pump and gaskets were installed. Every part was cleaned, sandblasted and then painted back to original colors. The block has the factory VIN stamped on the front. It is stamped higher and to the left of where it should be. We're told that they did a lot of weird things back then and this is not out of the ordinary. The factory “12” heads (which are the same as the Ram Air III’s) were completely rebuilt using hardened valve seats, factory screw in studs, and guide plates. A new 274XE Comp cam was added which is a little bigger than the factory Ram III cam. New Comp springs and roller rockers were also installed. The numbers matching Quadrajet carb was rebuilt and works great. Pump the gas pedal 1 time and the choke sets and the engine fires right up. The factory AC pump was rebuilt and the whole system was converted to 134. The exhaust consists of Ram Air III exhaust manifolds, factory correct 2 ¼” dual exhaust, Flowmasters, and new factory style exhaust tips. Not only does this GTO looks incredible, it has that great muscle car sound to back it up.TRANSMISSION:The original numbers matching transmission was rebuilt using all new seals and gaskets. The cars VIN is stamped on the case. The factory Hurst shifter was disassembled, cleaned and reinstalled using new bushings and clips. The factory flywheel was resurfaced and a new high performance clutch, pressure plate and throw out bearing were installed. This transmission shifts extremely smooth and is a blast to drive.REAR END:The original 3.23 ten bolt rear end was drained, sandblasted and repainted in semi-gloss black. New seals were installed along with fresh gear oil.SUSPENSION:The front and rear suspension were completely rebuilt. The frame, cross member, control arms, driveshaft, and sway bars were sandblasted and powder coated. All new bushings, ball joints, tie rod ends, and centerlink were reinstalled. New 2” lowering springs were used on all 4 corners. The power steering pump and steering box were sandblasted, painted and re-sealed. Brand new 17” Rally II replica wheels were chosen along with new directional performance tires. The rears are 17 X 9 with 275/40’s and the fronts are 17 X 8 with 245/45’s.BRAKES:New front rotors and pads were installed up front. The rear has new drums, shoes, wheel cylinders, and springs.BODY:We think the body is the pinnacle of this restoration. We buy all of our restoration projects right here in the dry southwest to keep rust to a minimal. Even when you buy “rust free” projects, there is always the small expected rust here and there. This body had absolutely no rust. The body was removed from the frame, bolted onto a rotisserie and then soda blasted, top and bottom. A little previous bodywork was uncovered, but no rust. The floor and trunk pans were perfect as well as both rockers and around the windows. The little plastic plugs on the inner rear quarters were still in place. All the sheet metal on this car is factory except for the left front fender, which is from Dynacorn. The original fender was dented too badly right on the body line. All the bodywork was done on the rotisserie with the doors and fenders attached. The car was shot using 2K primer, guide coated, and blocked several times until the gaps were right and the body was laser straight. After the bodywork was completed, the doors and fenders were removed. The complete body (top and bottom) was then painted using premium Sherwin and Williams paint in 1970 GTO Cardinal Red (Code 75). Three coats of base, followed by 4 coats of clear. The body was placed back onto the frame and the newly painted doors were bolted on. The complete front clip was then added including the factory Endura bumper. Once all the gaps were perfect, the front bumper was sanded and contoured to match the fenders. High quality 3M flexible body filler was used to get this 50 year old bumper to fit better than new. The front clip was then disassembled, painted, and then carefully reinstalled. Everything was color sanded, finishing with 2000, and then buffed out in 4 separate steps. The paint on this GTO is absolutely gorgeous. After that was completed, all the Judge appearance items were added. The correct reflective stripes, front and rear spoilers, Judge decals, and hood tach.INTERIOR:The factory Saddle (Code 255) interior was completely removed and restored. While that was out, the interior floor pan was covered in ¼” sound deadener. All new door panels, arm rests, carpet, seat covers, headrests, console, weather stripping, and headliner were bought for this restoration. The factory dash was sent out to Just Dashes for a complete restoration and came back looking perfect. All of the gauges were removed, checked, and cleaned. The factory clock was also cleaned and restored. Everything works as it should, the gauges, lighter, clock, AC, even the original reverse lock-out and key buzzer. The factory AM radio works, but the front and rear speakers are hooked up to a remotely controlled AM/FM, Bluetooth, MP3 player mounted in the glove box. The correct “T” Hurst shifter and Judge glove box emblem finish off this beautiful interior.CONCLUSION:This GTO is absolutely breathtaking. The paint is gorgeous, and the beautifully restored saddle interior is a perfect accent. The bottom of this car is just as clean as the top. Although this GTO could be mistaken for a trailer queen, it was built to be driven and enjoyed. It starts with ease, sounds amazing, shifts smoothly, and is an absolute blast to drive. Although we’re not trying to pass this GTO off as a true Judge, the only thing that would give it away for the real numbers guys is the “WT” stamped on the front of the engine instead of “WS”.
