1972 Opel GTI purchased this car back in 2010 in Michigan and spent thousands of dollars repairing it, replacing brakes, u-joints, steering, ball joints etc. The car had bad floor boards, so I cut the floors out and replaced them with new heavy gauge sheet metal. Did all the body work and primed it with epoxy primer.I have included a few photos of the work I did in 2010 on the body and floor.Fast forward 10 years to 2020. It sat in my driveway in Florida, getting rusty and weathered. So once again, I dumped a ton of cash into the car, new battery, new brakes, rims and tires, water pump, radiator fan, fuel pump and more. The body is solid, so I did not sand it and prime it again.I am getting too old to keep working on cars that I don't have time to drive, so I am selling all of my classic cars. I probably put 1,000 miles or less on this car in 10 years. Recently. I was driving it back and forth to work in Tampa Florida traffic. The body needs some attention as shown. It has surface rust where the primer weathered away and some small rust through spots, but still very solid. Mechanically, it is almost perfect except that it needs a new carburetor. The carb leaks and I have to fill it with a squirt bottle to get it started after sitting overnight.Once running, it runs like a champ and drives like it did new in 1972. Everything is tight, because I replaced almost everything in 2010.The engine has under 80,000 miles and was rebuilt around 70,000 miles, not because it was worn out, but the then owner wanted a race engine, So with a 0.500 lift cam, higher compression pistons and the works it became Opel 2.0. The engine now winds out at high RPMs, built for oval track racing. It idles like a dragster, but a 1.9 Liter dragster. Which is funny when you think about it.It is an absolute blast to drive, run the engine to 7,000rpms and enjoy the 4 speed. Cruises down the highway at 70mph no problem and can easily pass other cars at 70mph because of the upgraded engine. This car is looking for a new home. Someone that wants to finish the body, interior and enjoys driving the car. I am getting too old, the tiny cabin hurts my back and is just less comfortable than it was when I was much younger and thinner. The car is at my business in Tampa Florida 33614. Come drive it, check it out and verify everything I have stated.I have had the car for 10 years and love it.I would be asking much more for the car if it looked better, but I don't have time or the energy to finish the body, so it is a great deal at $3500. Get in it and drive it anywhere with confidence.Car is sold as is where is. I will gladly work with your transport company to get the car loaded and shipped to you. Or pick up locally in Tampa. The car is currently registered and insured with a Florida title, can be driven if you come to see it.Contact me with any questions, for more photos, videos or to look at the car in person. |
