CAR DESCRIPTION FROM SELLER
1965 Maserati Mexico Vignale-bodied prototype that was built for a Mr. Barroso of Mexico. According to factory records, this prototype was stamped with chassis number AM103 022, which had previously belonged to an Allemano-bodied 5000 GT that was sent back to the factory in Italy following an accident. A 4.2-liter V8 and a ZF five-speed manual transmission were fitted as part of the build. The car was showcased at the 1965 Turin Motor Show and was returned to the owner in Mexico shortly thereafter. It entered the US in the late 1990s. Finished in red (original color) over tan, this Mexico prototype is now offered with a clean California title that describes it as a 1962 Maserati.Chassis AM103 022 was originally built as one of 34 Tipo 103 coupes produced, and was among 22 of those bodied by Carrozzeria Allemano. It was sold new to Adolfo López Mateos, then president of Mexico, before being acquired by the second owner circa 1962. The car was returned to the Maserati factory for body repairs in 1965, and it is believed that the then-owner elected to commission the construction of a new car, which was subsequently marked with the wrecked car's chassis number. The ensuing design by Vignale?s Giovanni Michelotti became the basis for the Maserati Mexico, which debuted as a production model in 1966.The bodywork is finished in red, and areas of the paint have flaked off of the horizontal surfaces. The front bumper is missing, as is the left taillight, though a trunk lid emblem is included in the sale and shown in the photo gallery below. The car?s dimensions is wider and longer than the production Mexico model, with a lower and aggressive profile.15x6.5? Borrani RW3910 wire wheels are secured by three-eared knock-offs and wear older tires. The braking system incorporates discs all around, while the suspension utilizes an independent front system with coil springs and a live rear axle with leaf springs. The interior features seating for four trimmed in tan leather with a matching console extended between the rear seats. One door panel is included in the sale and pictured in the gallery below, as are two sun visors. Additional details include a beige headliner, black carpeting, polished sill plates, a wood-rimmed steering wheel, and a locking glovebox.Smiths instrumentation is housed in a wooden dash face and includes a 300-km/h speedometer and a 7k-rpm tachometer. The five-digit odometer shows 59k kilometers (~37k miles), with true mileage unknown. The seller notes that the spare wheel, tool kit, and jack are all missing. The 4.2-liter V8 features dual overhead camshafts and is equipped with four Weber carburetors. The engine installation, including stamping of the block to match the replaced 5000 GT?s serial number, is believed to have been performed during construction of the prototype. A block stamp reading AM103 022 can be seen in the photo gallery below. The engine has not been started for at least 30 years, attempts to turn the engine over about 10 years ago was unsuccessful. Shifting remains through a ZF five-speed manual transmission. The car is seen above on Vignale?s stand at the 1965 Turin Motor Show, where it was presented as a prototype that had been commissioned by a client. Additional historic images of the car are attached in the gallery below. Also shown in the gallery are screenshots of correspondence with Maserati historian Fabio Collina, citing factory documents that refer to the construction of a new car with chassis ?tipo 101/11,? to be stamped with the serial number from a client's 5000 GT.There is a photoshoot of over 80 pictures available on request.
