1961 Daimler SP250 - 50,532 miles Offeredfor sale is my rare, beautiful and ceaselessly grin-inducing part of Britishsports car history my 1961 Daimler SP250 "Dart". Introduced atthe New York Motor Show in 1959, with its beautifully designed fiberglass body, 4-WheelGirling disc brakes and an Edward Turner 2.5L Hemi head V8 engine this car mademotoring history. Rumor has it that the Sp250 was built for the British police toallow them to catch up to speeding XKE’s and Aston Martins. Some rare Sp250 policecruisers have been identified and fetched record prices at collectible car auctions. Only 2,600 odd cars were ever producedworldwide less than 1/3rd having left hand drive so finding a clean, correct example at a reasonable price isn't a frequent occurrence. The car isso popular in England that many left hand drive examples have migrated backoverseas and once well restored fetch prices as high as 65,000 Pounds Sterling($83,000). My car has been Daimler Modified to C-spec for the USA marketbenefitting from the more rigid Jaguar produced chassis. This numbers matching exampleis in original condition with some modifications. Upgrades include replacingthe original 4 speed manual transmission( which did not have 1st gear synchromesh) with a Toyota Supra 5speed transmission for increased acceleration and effortless high speed highwaycruising. Electronic ignition replaces points. An electric radiator fan hasbeen installed replacing the original engine driven fan. The original steeringwheel has been replaced with a Motolite sport steering wheel. All originalparts are included with the sale. ReluctantlyI am no longer able to enjoy driving this car, age forces this sale. To enhancethe joy of driving this car I recommend replacing any worn suspension bushingsand replacing the front shock absorbers (new ones supplied). The rear shockabsorbers need rebuilding at a cost of about ($175 each). Because the originalworm-gear steering is very stiff, making it difficult to park, the car wouldbenefit greatly from upgrading to rack and pinion steering. Upgrade kits are readilyavailable and to their delight have been successfully installed by numerous DaimlerSp250 owners worldwide. Thecar is an absolute joy to drive. For anyone who has never experienced a TurnerHemi head V8, it entirely makes the car. An incredible throaty engine tone outof the dual exhaust is the first indication upon turning the key, followed byincredible force when one finds some open road. The engine is so strong the carcan start in 2nd gear effortlessly and can even take a slow speed turn in 5th.The Turner engine is so flexible that 3rd gear will take you from 10-80 MPH. All gears are synchromesh. Perhaps the mostfun part is that when people turn to look at what's passing them making thatbeautiful exhaust sound, very few can determine what the car is. The engineidles smooth and very quiet but pulls strongly through each gear, has excellentoil pressure and has never shown any indication of overheating. The car drivesand brakes straight. It has a truly visceral, wonderfully vintage drivequality. The fiberglass body is in need of new gel-coating, paint and consistentpanel fits. Front grill has some chrome blemishes. Original Connolly leatherseats and dash cover are in excellent condition as are the Wilton carpets, interior door panels and soft top. The tonneau cover needs re-stitching. This carhas a very clean and solid under-body with absolutely no rust. This car has beenconsistently insured, driven and garaged. For the past 25 years this car hasbeen registered with the Daimler Lancaster owners club (DLOC) and (passport 250),which lists all registered Daimler sp250 owners names and addresses, their carsby vin and any modifications undertaken. Shop manual and parts book is includedwith the sale as well as 20+ years of Daimler Lancaster owners magazines. Partsare readily available through the DLOC or members at reasonable prices. If you've specifically beenlooking for a Sp250 Dart, or just something different in the European sportscar market, this car represents a rare and excellent opportunity to acquire a unique, rare and mechanically sound example and solid investment.
