HISTORY OF THE KAISER DARRIN By 1952, Kaiser Motors was showing interest in producing a stylish sports roadster to suite the interest of Americans who had started purchasing two seat sports cars from European manufactures. Famed automotive designer Howard “Dutch” Darrin, who had also worked with other great marques such as Duesenberg and Packard, designed the new car with his patented sliding pocket doors and a fiberglass body to help save production costs and shave weight. Henry Kaiser’s wife reportedly said the Kaiser Darrin 161 prototype was “the most beautiful thing I have ever seen.” This was enough for Henry Kaiser to give the green light for production which began in 1953, with all cars being produced as 1954 models.
