| About this vehicle This 1955 Ford Thunderbird is a restomod with updates to the exterior, interior and drivetrain. The owner has had it for 2 years. The vehicle runs great and is mainly used for car shows. Seller's Notes In 1980, fledgling auto builder Harry Shay decided to branch out from his fiberglass Model A's and build Thunderbird replicas as well. Ford licensed the project and planned to sell them at participating dealers. The unexpected demand overwhelmed Shay with orders and when the dust settled, only 200 were built with hundreds more angry customers demanding their cars. Shay filed bankruptsy and the rest is history. This car is one of those 200 cars. However, it has been completely restored with a modern Ford EFI roller cam motor and T5 transmission. Further, the old 4 lug suspension has been replaced with a 5 lug setup including a custom width 9 inch Ford rear. The wheels are American Legend 17" and along with the tires are brand new. The interior is also new top to bottom. Exterior This Shay Thunderbird replica is not a show car. The paint has some flaws and there are some stress cracks evident on a couple areas. However, it shines beautifully and draws attention everywhere it goes. Mechanically, the car is excellent. It has great oil pressure, runs cool in all conditions, and all electricals function as they should except for the original style clock. It does have one switch that is unused and the lighter socket is not hooked up. Doors, hood, and trunk open smoothly with very minor rubbing of the interior materials on the doors. Windshield trim on the inside fits poorly and could be replaced for a cleaner look. Seat covers, carpet, floor mats, and dash cover are all brand new. Windows roll up and down as they should, but mechanisms are a little stiff. The removable hardtop is in good condition and fits as it should. The engine is a late model forged internals Ford 5.0 with a hydraulic performance roller cam, a 93 octane tune, stainless headers, GT40 heads and intake. It has roller rockers and hardened push rods. Exhaust is all new with stainless bullet mufflers, an x pipe, and twin tips. It sounds absolutely amazing. It has a heavy duty radiator and electric fan running with a thermostatic control. The rear is a custom width 9 inch ford with 350 gears. Trunk is carpeted with a trunk mounted battery. Bumpers are driver quality with some imperfections but no rust. They could use a good machine polishing. There is no a/c and no heater, but heater hoses are routed and a compact unit will be included but not installed. Speakers are installed and wired but not hooked up. There is no amplifier or head unit. A used unit and a bazooka sub will be included if the purchaser desires. Full build receipts from the work I have done as well as a info booklet, an original Shay brochure, and a picture of the car when new is also included. The car wonderfully reliable and I have driven it from the Ky/Tenn line to Cleveland Ohio with no problems. Pick it up, drive it home. Recent surgery prevents me from enjoying this car as I'd like, so it's for reluctant sale. It is for sale elsewhere and is subject to prior sale.
