1964 Mercury Comet 202, base model. Straight 6 engine with an early 2-speed Merc-O-Matic transmission. I think it is a 200 ci, but could be the 170 ci. Doesn't make a difference since the automatic trans robs a lot of the power. 4 Door. I bought this car 3 years ago and have put way too much money into it. I don’t have a garage, so most repairs end up being done by professionals. Runs and drives well. Told that engine and trans are original, “numbers match”, but buyer to verify. No power anything. Sold by Bountiful Motor Sales in Utah a long time ago. It is a Utah car, so the rust issues aren't anywhere near as bad as a car back east.Engine: Rebuilt professionally by Intermountain Transmission. Put on 3-4K miles. Electric fuel pump and an aftermarket 2 barrel carb. Runs good and is perfectly driveable, but sounds like it needs the valves adjusted. New Napa starter, solenoid, electric module. Radiator was repaired when engine was rebuilt, but has developed a micro leak and needs repair or replacement. Coolant level very slowly drops (200 or so miles). I'm not positive, but I think the alternator is producing a high pitched tone and if I’m right it’ll probably need a new alt soon.Transmission: Early 2 speed automatic also rebuilt by Intermountain Transmission. 1st gear 0-45ish and 2nd speed 45ish and up. Zero to 20 mph takes about 8 seconds, so it’s no speed demon. Shifts well. Second gear has good pickup. I’ve taken the car up to 75 mph without engine/trans issues. I’ve read that retro fitting with a C4 transmission would give it good acceleration. Driveshaft and rear untouched, but works fine.Brakes: Hand pull type emergency brake works perfectly. Drum brakes all the way around. All new wheel cylinders and hardware. Some new brake lines. Master untouched. No power brakes.Suspension/Steering: The front end was rebuilt and had an alignment.. Steers fine. No power steering. New tires when I got it. Front right shock squeaks as it moves up and down. New, uninstalled shocks included.Heat/AC: Interior blower motor works fine. Has 2 speeds. Heat works great. Has original A/C, but the condenser is missing. The lines going into the car and the interior piece are present and look good, but I don’t know it’s condition.Interior: White headliner is fine. New door switches and dome light, but dome light cover missing. Seats are comfortable and were reupholstered professionally. Carpet looks like it was replaced 30 years ago. It’s worn through on the drivers side underneath the mat. The rest of the interior seems to be original.Exterior: Original paint, with a lot of splotches all over to touch it up. At least I didn’t do that, I got it that way. Several small dents and scrapes. The 202 emblems were broken off long ago. Both bumpers have dents. The Driver's floor pan is partially rusted through, but you can’t tell from the inside. Oddly, the rest of the car has only shown some surface rust but otherwise solid. Body definitely needs to be re-done. Front windshield has a chip that could be filled (I got it that way), but otherwise all the glass is good.Other: New retro looking stereo with amp and new speakers. No thumpers, but it cranks and has a pretty good bass. New mats, even in the trunk, helped to spruce it up a bit. New rear light sockets and bulbs. Turn signals blink, but does not automatically click back, so you have to manually turn it off after the turn. Front parking lights need new lenses and maybe sockets. At around 50-55 mph, the front right vibrates, but I think the tire needs to be rebalanced, but it may be some other issues as well.The car has been registered for daily driving, not as a classic. Hasn't stranded me, been a good daily driver. Although I've driven it on the freeway regularly, I wouldn't recommend a long drive until the front end wheel vibration has been looked at.I have tried to describe it the best I can for honest, full disclosure.
