1974 IHC Scout II 4x4- Factory specificationsinclude:345 V-8 engine, T-18 4 speed transmission and Dana 20transfer case. It has Dana 44 axles withfront disk brakes. Gear ratio is 3.31,with open differentials. Has powersteering and power brakes. Has air conditioning which is currently all therebut not functional. Front bench seat with cover. Has aftermarket dual exhaust.When buying a 45+ year old vehicle, you can count on havinglots of worn out parts to repair. This has been my lockdown project and I havespent well over 100 hours in labor on this vehicle and approximately $3,000 innew parts. The list of items addressedincludes:· New Windshield and rubber gasket· New Tires- 5 each, 235/75/15 mud terrains. All factory hub caps present.· Suspension- 2” lift, newbolts, etc. Driveshafts cleaned and lubed, 2 new u-joints. New shock absorbers.· Brakes- New front rotors, calipers and pads. Bearings re-packed.· Locking Hubs- Selectro hubs, disassembled,cleaned, lubed, broken parts replaced.· Fluids- Changed them all with highquality lubes- engine, transmission, transfer case, differentials.· Winch System- All new, 12,000 lb winch, bumper,Optima yellow top battery and dual battery charger.· Engine- New 3 row aluminum radiator, freshanti-freeze, all new hoses, new belts. Pertronix electronic ignition, newplugs.There are lots more smaller repairs but you get thepicture. I also have spent hours,scraping, pressure washing, de-greasing and detail painting frame andmechanical components. This has been a labor of love and given me somethingproductive to do during the last 5 months.There remain imperfections. There is rust but no compromise to structural integrity. Doors close correctly. There is a dent in driver’s front finder andrear roof near hatch. I have not begunany interior restoration.I recently drove this Scout round trip to Southern Idaho,1,200 miles, often 80 mph and got nearly 14 mpg. Tracks straight, rides smooth, fires rightup and has good power. Took it off-roadin steep rocky terrain and it performed flawlessly. |
