Inspired by the original Mako Shark Corvette concept vehicle, the third generation of the Corvette, introduced for the 1968 model year, was a radical design departure from the second-generation Sting Ray models of 1963-67. The nickname “shark” has stuck with the C3 generation ever since.1968 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible - 1 original owner. It is a 327/four-speed-powered convertible, in Silverstone Silver over a Dark Blue interior, with 43,300 original miles. Added a hood stripe in 1970. Apart from maintenance and repair items over the years, everything else on the car is in original condition, including the paint. It has been garaged for all of its 52 years and never driven in the winter.EXTERIORPer the “986” code on this Corvette’s trim tag, it was originally painted Silverstone Silver, the paintwork is original, with no re-sprays ever. The finish remains strong, particularly for 52-year-old lacquer, with the only paintwork performed on the car being the addition of a black hood stripe, which was done in 1970.. There are no apparent blemishes in the paint itself, but there are couple of scratches on one of the doors and a few minor stone chips, mostly at the front of the car, on the front fenders. All of the glass is original and in good condition, with no scratches or cracks, while the weather stripping is also in good condition, there is some age-related checking in the material, but not enough to allow any known leaks or wind noise on the road. All of the exterior lighting works and has been verified by a recent New York state inspection. As for the black convertible top, it is in “excellent shape” and opens and closes without any problems. The weather stripping on the top, where it meets the windshield header, is worn, but still holds its seal.INTERIORThe 411-code Dark Blue interior is in original condition, including the vinyl upholstery on the bucket seats. The seat covers remain in “great shape,” with a cover on the driver’s seat most of the time helping to preserve that one. The carpet is original and in very good condition, without stains, tears or excessive wear. Additionally, all of the gauges are in working order. There are no apparent cracks or splits in the dash pad and the wood-rimmed steering wheel remains in very good original condition.POWERTRAINUnder the hood is a 300-horsepower 327 V-8 — the only year a 327 was available in the C3 generation — and a Muncie four-speed manual transmission. The engine has never been rebuilt, although the Rochester Quadrajet carburetor has been replaced. There is no reported smoke at startup and the engine idles well after it warms up a bit. The engine and engine compartment are unrestored and the photos show non-original black-painted valve covers and the original ignition shield assembly is not installed. The four-speed gearbox shifts well, with no clunks. There are no reported leaks around the engine, transmission or rear axle.DOCUMENTATIONThis vehicle will be sold on a clean New York title in the seller’s name. After more than half a century of ownership, I decided that it’s time to part with this 1968 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible. It’s a decision made, in part, to help prevent the car from sitting unused. Sharks need to keep moving, of course. That’s what they do.BUYINGPlease do not bid if you're not seriously interested or financially able to purchase this vehicle.
