Despite such staggering figures, the engine combo is surprisingly simple. Other than a set of Carrillo steel rods, the short block is completely stock. The only other major modifications are a set of CNC-ported factory 32-valve heads, upgraded twin turbos cranked to 30 psi, and a bigger solid-roller cam. With the nitrous engaged the horsepower numbers jump to an eye-popping 1,200 horsepower! The Chevelle even knocks down 32 mpg! To make space for the drive accessories, radiator, intercooler, A/C condenser and turbo piping the engine had to be moved back 8 inches from the stock location. This work, along with custom brackets and pulleys compress this monstrous power plant under the stock GM hood. The factory Duramax injection pumps are driven off the crank while a second pump was added to help pressurize the fuel rails to meet the increased fuel demands of the setup. Bassani Exhaust fabricated a one-off custom exhaust system for the Chevelle which makes all the right sounds. The cutting-edge technology does not stop at the engine. A modernized Art Morrison front clip, complete with C5 Corvette aluminum suspension components was infused into the Chevelle and Fast Eddie's of Orange, California installed the custom four-link rear set up. Putting the power to the pavement is a narrowed Ford 9 rearend and big tubs to accommodate the gargantuan 22 wide Mickey Thompson radial tires. Numbers printed on paper is one thing, and the visceral sensation of driving a diesel-powered hot rod is another thing entirely.
