This spiritual successor to the Speedster provided all the low windshield open top driving with a few more creature comforts including roll-up windows, more comfortable seats, and a better constructed soft top. Also, the windshield could still be removed for competition, for which many of these cars enjoyed. Furthermore the T5 Roadster had raised front and rear bumpers with new brake cooling body openings and new cast-aluminum brake drums. This T5 Roadster completed production on January 11th, 1960 and was delivered from the factory in Slate Grey (6001) paint with Red (A) leatherette upholstery. It was optioned with Metzeler tires. Factory driving lights were installed at the dealer. This Roadster was imported from Germany new by a California enthusiast who also owned auto dealers. He kept the car for 4-years before selling it in 1964 for $1,700 to good friend, a local architect who kept this car for 47-years. In 2007, he began a restoration. A close friend of his owned a restoration shop called Master Craft in Cathedral City. He managed the restoration. The body was stripped to the bare metal and repainted in black. It was noted by the owner and the shop that it was never in an accident and the body was very straight and dry with no serious rust. During the restoration, the owner decided to change the original color of Slate Grey to Black. This meant extra work for the body shop to make sure everything was as straight as possible. Meanwhile, Autos International of San Diego restored the interior and top. They kept the same factory color for the interior, but upgraded from the original vinyl to leather. Finally, Jack Staggs in San Clemente did the mechanical restoration, which included a full engine rebuild. Although Jack doesn’t have the old records, we just checked with him and he does remember the car. He built it to stock specification with its original Zenith carburetors. On April 26th, 2010, the current Orange County enthusiast purchased this 356 from the architect with 3,338 miles since the restoration. The architect was the current owner’s neighbor and he had been eying the car for some time. For the past decade, he has primarily used it for local shows and weekend driving. He entered it in the 356 Club Dana Point show in October of 2012 and won the Chairman’s award. The trophy is included with the car. During his care, he has used well respected local Porsche specialists for routine service. From some of the receipts we have, these services include:Service, adjust clutch, points, pulley seal (5/10 @ 3,364 miles)New windshield (9/11 @ 4,571 miles)Major service (7/12 @ 4,943 miles) Adjust valves Spark plugs Oil service Fuel filter Rebuild Zenith carburetors Seal rear axleAlthough the owner doesn’t have many receipts, he serviced the car regularly at a local independent specialist. In the last few years, he hasn’t driven it much. So, we had our local mechanic perform an inspection and tune up, which included: oil service, adjust valves, flush brake system, repair rear brake light, replace reverse light switch. The condition of this Roadster is excellent. It is clear for the past 13 years and 6,000 miles that it was well cared for and lightly used. The black paint has a nice deep luster to it and shows minimal signs of use. We just had our detail expert do a complete paint correction and ceramic coating to seal and protect the finish. There are a couple very minor imperfections in the body in a couple spots that we will point out in the photos. However, it’s very tidy for an older restoration. The brightwork is also in very good shape with no major scratches or flaws. The glass has no major chips and is in good shape. The chrome wheels are wider 5.5” and wearing older (2010 date stamps) Vredestein Classic tires with near full tread and no cracks or other signs of age. All the exterior lights work. The soft top and rear plastic window are near perfect with no creases or heavy wear points. The current owner never put the top down in his 10-years of ownership. The tonneau cover fits nicely as well. The interior is equally as tidy and indicative of a lightly used 356. The leather feels, looks, and smells great. There are no tears or rips and only light wear on the driver exit bolster. The carpet has no stains and has both custom floor mats in the same square weave as well as traditional rubber mats. The door panels and dash top are perfect. All the gauges, except the oil temp gauge work. We checked sending unit and it was fine. It could be the gauge or wire. The hand throttle also works. The original Bakelite plastic steering wheel and shift knob were removed and are included with this Roadster. A smaller diameter (400mm) wood example and matching wood shift knob were installed. This makes it much easier to get in and out of the car as the current owner is over 6’4” tall. The underside is very tidy with no signs of major repair or damage. It was evenly coated during the restoration. The engine bay is equally as nice and the numbers matching engine also has the three matching case numbers present. The decklid has a faint factory stamping of the last two correct digits of the VIN, indictive of being an original panel. The hood has a different 2 digits on the latch and could be due to the latch being replaced. This Roadster starts easily and with the help of the hand throttle, holds a smooth idle. The throttle response is excellent and it builds revs with no hesitation. The transmission shifts smoothly with no grinding or slipping. The handling is very good and the car tracks straight. Fresher tires and a possible alignment would further help. The brakes have a good bite. When cold, they make a slight vibration. We just had the brakes serviced and it stops well with no fading. California registration is current and paid to April of 2021. The YOM (year of manufacturer) plates are original CA yellow plates, but not original to the car. The current owner restored one of the plates to black with yellow letters just for looks. The plates are only available for California buyers registering the car in California. This 356 comes with 2 keys, original jack, spare, tool kit, original steering wheel with original shift knob, Dana Point 356 show trophy, indoor car cover, tonneau covers (2) with vinyl cases, owner’s manual, tool kit, battery tender, after market cup holder, and of Porsche Certificate of Authenticity.**Note: VIN and other numbers withheld to protect against fraud. All numbers including VIN, Engine, and color will be provided to serious buyers. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Paul through AutoKennel website.
