It underwent a professional frame-off restoration some time ago and is still elegant, complete with a massive, inline eight-cylinder engine. Made in Flint, Michigan, this example was produced about 2/3 of the way through the 1931 model run. The car spent some time in Oregon after a Portland classic car dealer purchased it from an estate in late 2006. During the Great Economic Depression, 80 series models were only made from 1931 to 1933, with a longer wheelbase presented each year. Dressed in a very handsome two-tone green, the car’s paint and trim are in overall great shape. The lighter green contrasts well with the darker green wings and the black rubberized roof. There are numerous chrome items dotting the car, which completely reject any notion of this being a business or entry-level coupe. There are a pair of cowl lights; sideview mirrors lashed to the dual side-mounted spare tires (each with its own matching wire wheel). A large hood ornament tops the massive, one-piece grill. A pair of chromed headlamp pods are mounted about one-third of the way from the grill’s peak and there are chrome, two-bladed bumpers, front and rear. This example has a driver’s side taillight and windshield wiper but the wiper is inoperable. The car’s Fisher body is straight and solid, including the unit trunk and the external Buick trunk shell, which contains a pair of original vintage suitcases with colored liners that go with the car’s exterior colors. This Buick rolls on Lester wide whitewalls, size 6.00-6.50/19 all around, including the side-mounted spares. Each tire is mounted a factory wire wheel finished in the lighter green. The tires are all in good, original order while the wheels are in very good condition for their age. Under that long hood with louvers on both sides is a 345 CID OHV inline Fireball 8 eight-cylinder engine with a three-speed sliding gear synchromesh transmission as its dance partner. In the rear is a 4.27:1 differential. For 1931, Buick gave the 80 series a new cooling system with thermostatically controlled shutters. 1931 was the first year for straight 8 Buicks. There are 4 different sizes of straight 8 engines from 1931 to 1935, of which this Buick was fitted with the next-to-largest straight eight engine. Inside, there are additional luxury touches. Green silk rear and side window shades are ready to guard the backseat occupants from prying eyes or the sun. There’s a dome light in the headliner and a rearview mirror with an embedded clock. The windshield slides up several inches versus tilting out for fresh air ventilation. Gray mohair upholstery and carpeting are in excellent order, as is the matching headliner. A four-spoke steering wheel faces the driver, along with a metallic instrument panel that features a full set of ancillary gauges but the fuel sight glass is inoperable. The dashboard was revamped from 1930 models and had lower front seats that sported deeper cushions. The front passenger seat folds down, permitting those in the back, especially women who wore hoop skirts to get in and out gracefully. This is gorgeous survivor coupe from an era of elegance and grace set against a backdrop of economic uncertainty. There cannot be many examples of these Victoria coupes remaining, so if you’re interested, stop by MotoeXotica Classic Cars today to check out this stunning piece of early 1930s automobilia from General Motors. Competition to this Buick in 1931 included Auburn’s 8-98 Series Coupe; Cadillac’s Series 355 Coupe; Chrysler’s 8 Series CD (First Series); LaSalle’s 345 Series; Reo’s Flying Cloud 25N Series; Studebaker’s Commander Series 70 Coupe; Willys’ 8-80D Victoria Coupe.
