Although there weren’t any significant body changes, there were quite a few small upgrades that made this model year highly desirable. It was the first year of 12-volt system and the last year before U.S. emissions and safety laws took effect. Also, with the upgraded motor and suspension, they are among the best driving vintage Beetles. Despite the large production numbers of these cars, finding a clean, straight, dry, and mostly original/unrestored example that hasn’t been modified is becoming seriously difficult. This Beetle was sold new by Spartan Volkswagen of San Jose, California on August 4th, 1967 to a Ms. Marilyn Robinson of San Jose, California. It appears she owned the car until the early/mid 1980’s when it was sold to Carl “Ted” Mumm of Newport Beach, California. He bought the car on April 14th, 1985 with 39,838 original miles. We are actually close friends with the dealer that sold this VW to Mr. Mumm and have the sales documentation from that transaction. During Mumm’s ownership, he had services performed by Daniel’s Speed Shop in Costa Mesa, CA. He did an engine swap in 2006 with 59k-miles. Original engine had low compression on cyl #3. The work done included: Install single port engine from 1966 that had been built to 1600 New muffler and tips Fan belt, fuel filter, and hoses Clutch kit, flywheel seals and O rings Adjust valves Oil service Replace axle boots Transmission mounts Rear main shaft seal The current owner first saw this Beetle at the beginning of the original Cars & Coffee in Irvine, CA. He “bugged” Mumm for years until he finally caved and sold him the car on January 14th, 2014 with around 61k original miles. The current owner is a long time 356 engine builder who specializes in pushrod and 4-cam motors. Just before he brought the car to us to sell, he invested nearly $2,800 on the following recent services: Valve adjustment Valve cover gaskets Oil service Compression test: #1) 150 #2) 157 #3) 155 #4) 155 Bosch spark plugs and wires / adjust timing Install original Bosch distributor / set points Fuel filter and fuel line Lube front end Clean oil bath air cleaner Complete brake job: brake lines new wheel cylinders new master cylinder fluid flush all brake hoses New “Classic” tires Upgraded H4 sealed headlights This ’67 convertible is in excellent “survivor-driver” condition. Much of its originality has been preserved. The exterior looks fantastic for its age. There are minor signs of use, but nothing significant. The car received a light exterior only repaint decades ago. It has held up well. There are no signs of damage or rust. It appears most of the deco trim and rubber is original. The glass is all original including the windshield. All the exterior lights work properly. The original date stamped correct steel wheels are wearing their original finish and still have their original and unrestored hub caps/beauty rings (see pics). New “Classic” tires have just been installed. The extra set of Empi wheels are wearing tires and are available for purchase separately. Both original CA black license plates have also been preserved. The soft top looks great with no tears or major signs of use. Even the original glass rear window looks great. The interior is in equally nice condition and retains much of its originality. All the paint on the interior is original as well as in the trunk, engine, and door jamb areas. The seats are original and unrestored. They are a bit soft to sit on, but no tears or rips. The rear seats look fresh. The door panels show minimal wear. The small areas of carpet have been replaced over the years. However, the original rubber and sissel floor mats are in great condition and show just light wear. Period road flares and holder are present under the dash. All the interior lights and gauges work properly. Even the original Sapphire radio works. The headliner of the soft top is in very good condition with just some light staining due to age yet no major rips or tears. The original tonneau cover is in remarkable condition and quite rare to still be with the car. The trunk has all of its original pieces including the cardboard liners. It also has its original jack, spare wheel with original spare tire, and tool kit. The original color code sticker is present as well as proper vin plates. The engine compartment is just as tidy and the deck lid still wears its original reflective tape on the underside (see pic). This Beetle is an absolute delight to drive. It starts easily on the first try and holds a smooth idle. There is no smoking on start up. The throttle response is very peppy and it easily keeps up with modern traffic thanks to the upgraded motor with a few more horsepower. The brakes easily slow the car down and are more than adequate. The transmission shifts smoothly with no grinding or slipping. The handling is very light and crisp. Living in a small town, this would be wonderful to use even every day for errands. Of course, it would be a joy to experience on any scenic drive. California registration is current and paid through June of 2020 This VW comes with the original owner’s manual/cover, original delivery sales packet, extra set of keys, many records, original numbers matching engine (see pic), 35-years of CA registration slips, tool kit, jack, many small extra parts (see pics), and the original spare tire/wheel. *EMPI BRM Speedwell-London wheels with studs and nuts available for an additional fee (see pic). **Note: VIN and other numbers withheld to protect against fraud. All numbers including VIN, Engine, and color will be provided to serious buyers.
