1926 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost Tilbury Sedan with Coachwork by Rolls-Royce Custom Coach WorkChassis no. S 256PL and Engine no. 21565Desirable Tilbury sedan from Rolls-Royce Springfield factory/Beautifully presented in red/black body with red leather interior/Ideal long-distance touring vehicle/Well-maintained restorationRolls-Royce records state that this 1926 Silver Ghost, chassis S256PL, was originally delivered in October of 1926 to a J.Mortimer Coward IV of New York, born on a strikingly memorable day, I January 1900, and son of John Mortimer Coward, founder of the Coward Shoe Company. As revealed in a contentious will that was resolved in a court case, he died in March 1928 very soon after his purchase, was married to Audrey Loder and during his lifetime continued to run the Coward Shoe Company. As a matter of interest, Coward's mother Minnie (1872-1940) nee van Winkle, owned S270PL, another Springfield Rolls-Royce.At some point the car was sold to Agnew in Vermont who advertised it in the Flying Lady, the journal of the Rolls-Royce Owners Club in 1965, stating that he was the second owner, and that it had new upholstery and the engine had been overhauled.Chassis supplied by Rolls-Royce's Springfield, Mass. factory would usually be fitted with bodies produced by the likes of Brewster, Willoughby, Merrimac, and Holbrook. This car was built as a Tilbury sedan body, by Willoughby, body 1527, coachwork that remains original to the car today. The Tilbury sedan is one of several "catalog" styles offered by Rolls-Royce of America under the hallmark of Rolls-Royce Custom Coach Work, available in fixed-roof or landaulet styles.Chassis S 256 PL is seen today with an older restoration, finished in a handsome two-tone burgundy over black livery. The car's paint work has held up well, with some cracking on the fenders and is presented in tidy fashion. The car has nickel accessories and fittings that include dual side-mounted spares with twin-cowl lamps, body color wire wheels, wide whitewall tires, Bausch & Lomb drum headlights, leather windshield visor and trunk rack The interior is trimmed in complementary dark red leather, with fawn carpets, panels and headlining.Sold by Sotheby?s at the Ben Moser, famous automotive connoisseur, sale in Solvang, California in 1993, the car is almost certainly still in the same condition. It has subsequently passed through the hands of Manny Dragone in Connecticut, an equally respected authority on early cars and most recently was in Portuguese ownership.The structure of the car is outstanding and it is running and driving with great aplomb.The Tilbury-bodied Ghosts seldom appear for sale but they offer a near ideal combination of style and all-weather comfort.
