#'S MATCHING FORMULA 400, AUTO, POWER WINDOWS, VERY NICE This rare 1976 Pontiac Firebird Formula 400 offers a numbers matching motor and looks and runs excellent! The color is called Metalime Green but triple clear coated with metal flake so she shines, and yes it was on the Pontiac color charts for 1976. The combination of the Formula 400 body with only year with this type of dual scoop hood, make this a car stand out at the shows. It was repainted about eight years ago and with just 73,524 original miles, it didn't need any major surgery to look this good. The Formula 400 came stock with the cool twin-nostril hood and a ducktail spoiler. The rear urethane bumper is in excellent condition, gaps are perfect, which is notoriously tough to get right, and the paint shows very well, so it looks awesome. The perfect condition black interior appears to be largely original. The upholstery, the carpets, the door panels, headliner, and even the dash pad are in great shape. Options in this Formula include power windows, factory A/C, and a tilt steering column with a cool 3-spoke wheel that Pontiac fans should find reassuringly familiar. All gauges are working properly. An upgraded AM/FM/CD/XM is correctly installed with no cutting into anything, the air conditioning system should be easy to service in the future, everything is there but does need an AC belt as it was removed and I never had it replaced. Heater and blower motor does work. The trunk is solid and has a full-sized spare tire on a Rally 2 rim.For performance, you got the same firepower that the Trans Am guys received, arguably making the Formula 400 the top performer. The 400 cubic inch V8 is this car's original, numbers-matching engine and, although rebuilt nine years ago (many receipts – over $6,000 into engine rebuild) everything looks quite stock under the hood. From the air cleaner, which still inhales through a snorkel and not the hood, to the corporate blue engine enamel, to the fresh dual exhaust system, this one has plenty of performance but nothing radical to affect its value in the future. Backed by a TH350 3-speed automatic, it's a lot of fun to drive, with effortless low-end torque and a fantastic V8 bellow from the twin pipes out back with brand new chrome exhaust tips. It starts easily, idles well, and the underside is in very nice shape, not a rusty mess (and original not hidden with spray undercoating). Rally II rims with a unique color matching paint added are some of the coolest wheels of the period and they carry a set of recent GT radials. All fluids were just changed and car passed full safety inspection by licensed garage specializing in classic cars in my area. |
