These Bavarian bargains are among the last true vintage sport car values left. Porsche 911 and 356 prices have skyrocketed. Even good Alfas are hard to find and growing in value. What makes 2002s so desirable is that they are affordable to own, a blast to drive, and very reliable…the perfect vintage touring/rallying car. This example is great for those on a budget who want to have fun today. Not much is known about this 2002’s early history. However, due to how dry it is, we believe it to be a Southwest car. The current owner is a local SoCal enthusiast who enjoys vintage cars. He purchased this car in 2014 from a couple of enthusiasts in Las Vegas, Nevada. They were the ones who built the car for themselves and finished it the year prior. Upon receiving the car 6-years ago, the current owner brought it to Renaissance Motors of Tarzana, California. They are a local BMW/Mini independent specialist. They performed the following items, which totaled over $8,800: Replace steering column New flex coupler Resealed steering box and flushed with gear oil New steering wheel and turn signal switch assembly Steel brake lines and all other brake lines New master cylinder and reservoir Oil pan gasket, front engine cover, and valve cover gaskets New timing chain guides Resealed distributor drive and oil filter assembly Adjust valves Replace radiator, electric fan, and all coolant hoses New temperature sensor and wiring system New expansion tank New Bilstein shocks and spring rubber seals Alignment Flushed gearbox and differential Cleaned carburetor Repair wiring New ignition wires and coil Front strut mount For the last 6-years, the current owner has driven less than 1,000 total miles. He kept the car garaged and used it only for light weekend driving. He changed the oil regularly. When he brought it to us to sell, we took it to our local BMW specialist and had them perform an inspection and compression test. The results for the test were: 1) 140 2) 140 3) 145 4) 145 Our mechanic found the car in good condition with no major signs of damage, rust or repairs. The rear valance is steel. The front fiberglass valance is over the original factory steel part (see pics). The bottom of the engine is dry. There was some cutting into the front subframe just below the battery tray, but it was superficial. He recommends a valve adjustment at the next oil service. The exterior looks great and has a sport purpose vibe to it. The paint shines up nicely, however it’s just a driver quality paint job. It was done over 7-years ago and there are no signs of any major issues. A few areas of the paint on some trim pieces are chipping as well as peeling of paint inside the trunk area. The 2-piece BBS-style mesh wheels are 15x7 and are wearing tires dated 2014 with near full tread. There is no cracking. The brakes have about half-life remaining. All the exterior lights work properly including the upgraded LED headlights. All the glass is in good shape with no major blemishes. The windshield looks new. The interior was done at the same time as the exterior and looks fairly fresh. The seats have no tears or rips. The headliner, carpet, and door panels look good. The driver door handle has a small chunk out of the pull. The dash has been recovered. The gauges are lit with LEDs. The tachometer does not work. The speedometer doesn’t show the right speed and the odometer does not work. This 2002 starts easily on the first try and holds an even idle. Power is smooth and linear. We believe the motor is stock with some headers and exhaust upgrades. The gearbox shifts smoothly with no grinding or slipping. The car steers straight and handles well. The brakes have a good bite with no fading or pulling. This is a great way to have a turnkey vintage German sports sedan experience at a very affordable price. Or, it could be a good platform to increase power and performance. California registration is current to August 2020 and it has a recent smog test that it passed however, I don’t think it will pass visual inspection at a Star station. This BMW 2002 includes 1 set of keys, full set (4) of custom CocoMats®, California license plates (current), spare wheel/tire, fuel filler adapter, windshield sunshade, and recent service receipts. **Note: VIN and other numbers withheld to protect against fraud. All numbers including VIN, Engine, and color will be provided to serious buyers.
