1955 Pontiac Star Chief Convertible Vehicle Information Video Description 1955 Pontiac Star Chief ConvertibleThe Tri-Fives were not the only collectible cars from the mid-1950s, they are simply among the most popular. Ever thought about a Pontiac Star Chief instead? This example is a two-owner car; its previous owner lovingly took care of it for more than 20 years! This rarely seen Star chief convertible comes from a Colorado cosigner who has lovingly cared for this Pontiac since 2005, 14 years! He has to thin out his heard and has entrusted us to sell 4 of his cars. Nineteen fifty-five was the debut year for the second-generation Star Chiefs and it was the first year for 12-volt electrical systems at Pontiac. This example was one of 19,762 Star Chief Convertibles made in 1955. Made at GM’s Linden, New Jersey factory (VIN code L), this car is finished in a striking two-tone combination – Raven Black over Avalon Yellow (code 5505). The paint and trim are in overall very good order, with some gravel chips on the leading part of the hood and a few assorted and small blemishes. The car’s body is straight and solid and the black, power-folding canvas top is in good, original condition and has a clear rear window plus a yellow boot with black binding. The engine bay is very tidy, the battery appears new. The car has new side glass and its massive chrome bumpers are in very good order. Up front is a lighted hood ornament while out back are rear wheels skirts, dual exhausts and a Continental kit. This top-of-the-line Pontiac convertible rolls on Coker Classic wide whitewalls, size P225/75R15 at all four corners. Each tire is mounted steel wheels topped with factory wheel covers. The wheel covers are in good, original order while the tires are in very good order.Under the hood is a rebuilt 287 CID “Strato Streak” V-8 engine with a two-barrel carburetor and dual exhausts. It has hardened intake and exhaust valves to use unleaded fuel. Car has an electric and a new mechanical fuel pump. Nineteen fifty-five marked the first year of the OHV V-8. Backing this motor is an overhauled Hydramatic four-speed automatic transmission and revamped 3.64:1 differential. The automatic transmission was a Hydra-Matic of the “dual-range” variety, often called the “slant pan,” based on its unique case design.Inside, the interior now matches the exterior with original-style black-and-yellow upholstery. The front and rear bench seats are in excellent condition, as is the custom-fit black carpet. The two-spoke steering wheel is in very good order, as is the black metal dashboard, complete with its full array of gauges and the black and yellow inner door panels. The shiftier is in good, original order and the original push button radio has been optimized to receive AM and FM. The heater control valve was replaced and for purists, the original accessory tissue dispenser still works! All side glass was replaced during the restoration. Surrounding assembly refinished and re chromed. The entire front bumper has been re chromed, not a cheap venture.. The mechanism for the electric antenna works but it needs a new mast.Along with an all-new body, the straight-eight was superseded by the new V-8 power in 1955. Typical for the 1955 Pontiacs is the design with two wide "Silver Streaks" running the length of the hood. The hood ornament “Indian” was amber plastic that lit up when the headlights were turned on.Competition to this Star Chief in 1955 included Chevrolet’s Bel-Air Convertible, DeSoto’s Fireflite Convertible, Dodge’s Custom Royal Lancer Convertible, Ford’s new Thunderbird, Mercury’s Montclair Convertible and Oldsmobile’s Super 88 Convertible Coupe.Documentation includes original logbook, original owner’s manual, original convertible top manual, pile of receipts and a reproduction Pontiac shop manual.Seekers of mid-1950s classic convertibles often gravitate toward Chevrolet, Ford and Dodge. That mindset overlooks many other comparable makes, including Pontiac. This Star Chief droptop makes a viable alternative to remaining Bel-Airs, Sunliners and Custom Royal Lancers from 1955.
