CAR DESCRIPTION FROM SELLER
Very nice example of a late-issue 1950 Jeepster. Purchased as a nice-driving VJ from a TN private seller in late 2018, it was transformed over 900+ hours into a much more presentable and much better driving car. So much has been replaced, renewed and re-plated on this VJ that I've listed them below for those with an eye for details. In short, this is a Jeepster you can confidently own and operate for years to come - listed at a price well below spring- and summer-market values. As you know doubt know, they only made less than 20,000 total - in only 1948, 1949 and 1950. Very easy to work on - very easy to source parts and materials.A new project is arriving and my garage will need room. It's been a lot of fun for sure. Any questions, please contact me at any time through Messages here or "Contact Seller" from my feedback score. Always quick to respond.Located in Greensboro, NC - I'm happy to assist load vehicle for shipment when ready.Body and ChassisAll external sheet metal appears to be original and nothing needed repairing during the restoration. Floors are now nice and solid: the mounting bosses under & behind front seats were reinforced by welding-in new 16-GA steel and re-securing body to chassis using the factory threaded positions with new hardware. Rear area and inner fenders are excellent. All interior floor surfaces were sanded, passivated, epoxy-primed (Eastwood 14759ZP) and flat surfaces were covered with 1/8" asphaltic board (Sealtight PC-2) adhered with tar patch and stainless screws where necessary for period-correct sound deadening. OEM rubber mat was too deteriorated so carpeting was custom-made from outdoor medium grey carpet, secured by stainless snaps for easy removal and bound with InstaBind edging in Cactus Flower Red.Fender underliners at bottom front appear to have been corroded and tar-sealed a long time prior to me. Not at all visible unless underneath car. No structural integrity is lost; these were very common areas of fatigue on all Jeepsters. All trim was removed to allow a complete sanding, priming (Eastwood) and painting (Sherwin-Williams) of the body in acrylic enamel basecoat + clear. Engine bay, doors, under dash and inside all rear cavities were painted to 100% transition from the many previous shades of yellow and black to a crimson red over light-sage-ivory. Cigarette lighter deleted, otherwise left as original. Steering column + support, gearshift linkage, front and rear splash pans also properly matched to body color. Dashboard cap, wheel rims and windshield frame matched to upper body color. These various parts and ALL removable body components including seat frames, convertible top frame, hood, front grille, all five (5) wheels and splash pans were baked/sandblasted at DJ Powder Coating in Kernersville, NC, in preparation for painting.New firewall insulation, reproduced just like original in corrugated multilayer cardboard.Brand new windshield glass panels and new rubber seals.A custom Coverking Stormguard cover is included as well, as seen in pic. The "Jeepster" emblems are brand new repros of excellent quality - the oval "Jeep" tag is a rare, rare original.Convertible TopNew complete top, rear window curtain and pads from ARO2000, in black, trimmed with moss green. All stainless snaps and Tenax fittings as needed. New parade boot in Sierra Red Enduratex to match interior. All four side window curtains are from previous ownership and in very good shape.InteriorNew door panels and seat upholstery in Sierra Red Enduratex from EZ Softtops. While the frames are original to the car (blasted and painted in gloss Machine Grey), a previous owner created foam cores over marine plywood in place of the coil springs. Actually works really well.Chromed, ReplatedFront and rear bumpers beautifully replated by Tri-City Plating; all four step plates plated by FM Metal Polishing in Las Vegas, NV. FM also replated these difficult pot-metal pieces: dashcap ends, two caps at rear of doors and two at front of upper body trim, center Willys logo dash emblem, windshield wiper bodies, front grille emblem, instrument dashplate and ashtray door. FM also replated the front bumper rails and speedometer ring. Amazing work - highly recommended. All original Willys stainless trim was intact and simply polished by me: parking light rings, top frame clasps, all exterior door and body beltline pieces, door and rear upper body caps, front grille crossbars, front bumper overriders (uprights), interior door handles and overdrive cable knob/bracket. Headlight rings are new reproductions from Walck's, as are the exterior door handles and hubcaps. Stainless trim rings were sourced to fit these orphan Willys-Overland rims - not easy!Electrical - 100% 6 Volt Every component works as it should, which thankfully in a true VJ means very few items: headlights, parking lights, instruments, instrument lights and horn. (The wipers are non-electrical Trico vacuum units and work just fine - all cables and pulleys in great shape. Supplied from intake vacuum now after new fuel pump installed). All new wiring harness - expertly reproduced by Walck's - one of the first things to be installed upon reassembly. The original wiring was absolutely scary. New horn relay, horn button & rubbers. New proper 2-terminal ignition switch.EngineCorrect F-134 "Lightning" engine with 1-bbl Carter carb. Yes, this Donaldson oil-bath air cleaner is as rare as they come and works perfectly, as the factory would have fitted it. Starts perfectly every time. Pull choke out, two pumps of pedal and start with your foot-starter (which also has a new rubber pad). Push choke back to 10-20% and let warm up for a bit, then set off as you push the choke fully home. All valve lash is set to factory specs (0.018"/0.016") as is timing and gaps, etc. Runs like a champ, pulls very strong as these small 4-cylinders had a ton of torque. Removed engine during body restoration; new clutch installed and all possible linkages/bushings renewed and improved where needed. Great pedal feel now. Everything detailed and painted of course. Engine washed, scrubbed and repainted with valve head-on, in period colors. New exhaust manifold to replace warped old one. New fuel pump (non-vacuum), no change to starter or generator. Rebuilt carb. TransmissionExcellent Borg-Warner T-96 unit with R-10 overdrive. Fully wiped, washed and repainted in grey. Shifts beautifully, no issues with synchros, never pops out. Gear selector shaft actuator box (on steering column) rebuilt for nice smooth operation. New Walck's wiring, new overdrive relay unit from Vintage Auto Garage, new kickdown switch, original governor checked fine (32-36 mph cut-in), original solenoid with new seal. While #4 terminal contacts pull in, I'm not sure #6 is holding the plunger as it should. The OD mechanically freewheels as it should with cable engaged, but I haven't been able to run it like factory. V-A-G rebuilds these solenoids for less than $200.Drained both units without rinsing and refilled with NAPA 90W GL-1 oil (never hypoid!). New top cover gasket and shift lever rubber bushings - that's it.BrakesEverything fine here too. New front and rear hoses and all new stainless lines from Walck's. Cylinders were left alone including master. Fully flushed with DOT3, no leaks. Front assemblies cleaned and painted during suspension rebuild. Adjusters work as they should.Steering and SuspensionNothing touched with the rear axle other than new 90W GL-1 oil. Spring and shocks work as they should. Entire front suspension rebuilt/replaced in December 2019: main leaf spring, new shocks, new upper and lower control arm bushings, new passenger-side kingpin and bearing kit, new spring shackle pins, etc. All parts blasted and painted in gloss black. New square U-bolts from Stengel Bros to replace the 70 year old originals.Original Ross steering box cleaned, re-gasketed and painted. Did not replace sector shaft seal - does drip a bit but nothing major. New bias whitewalls from Coker Tire - 5.90 x 15.(1950 NC plate will be sold separately - thanks).
