1966 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 396 Convertible Vehicle Information Video Description 1966 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 396 Convertible • Same Indiana owner for the past 41 years! • Spent the past 22 years in dry storage • Genuine Super Sport • Original Chevelle SS 396 Convertible (code 13867) • 396 CID big-block V-8 engine with dual exhausts • Four-speed manual • Red exterior with a white, power-folding top and black interior with white trim • Power steering and power brakes At the height of the muscle car era, Chevrolet led the way with its variety of Chevelle models. This original and genuine Chevelle Super Sport 396 Convertible (style code 13867) spent the previous 22 years in dry storage and has had the same Indiana owner for the past 41 years before making its way here to MotoeXotica Classic Cars. Made during the third week of May 1966 at GM’s Leeds assembly plant in Kansas City, Missouri, this example is finished in red with a white, power-folding top. It left the factory with the following options, tinted windshield and deluxe seat belts and seat belt retractors. The paint and trim are in good, original order, however, there is at least one trim piece missing in front on the passenger side and there is some orange peel in the paint at the base of the driver’s side A-pillar. The car’s body work is solid and straight and the engine bay is tidy while the car’s chrome bumpers are in satisfactory order. The contrasting white, power-folding top is also in good, original order the plastic rear window has a sealed crack. The power top still functions but needs assistance to open or close. This Chevelle Super Sport rolls on Hercules H/P 4000 radials, size 235/60R15 at every corner. Each tire is wrapped around a chrome American Racing wheel. The wheels are in good, original shape while the tires are in very good condition and have good tread depth. Under the hood is a 396 CID big-block V-8 breathing through dual exhausts and bolted to a four-speed manual transmission. Driver convenience features include power steering and power brakes. Inside, the car’s black interior with white trim is in overall average condition. The black Strato front buckets and rear bench look great while the matching carpet is in good, original order. The two-spoke steering wheel is ready for more adventures while the dashboard and two-tone inner door panels echo the general interior theme. An aftermarket tachometer is lashed to the steering column and the gas gauge is inoperable. The center console and floor-mounted shifter are in good order and a Panasonic AM/FM stereo rounds out the interior. Nineteen sixty-six saw a complete restyle of the Chevelle on the previous frame that included smooth contours, a broad new grille and bumper treatment, and curved side windows. Bulging rear fender lines and a “flying buttress” roofline (tunneled into the “C” pillar) were highlights of the ‘66 hardtops, shared with other GM “A” body models. The new body reflected the “Coke bottle” body shape that became the fad for American cars in the mid-1960s. A four-door hardtop-styled Sport Sedan joined the Malibu series. It was an attractive car and was offered through 1972 but never achieved the high-production figures as the pillared sedan. Chevelles continued in 300, 300 Deluxe and Malibu trim. Available engines were a 327-cubic-inch V-8 instead of either of the sixes, or the mid-level option, a 220-horsepower 283-cubic-inch V-8. Options included a tachometer, mag-style wheel covers and sintered-metallic brakes, four-way power seats, a tissue dispenser and cruise control. The Chevelle SS396 became a series of its own in 1966 with style numbers 13817 and 13867. SS396 sport coupes and convertibles used the same Malibu sport coupe and convertible bodies with reinforced frames and revised front suspension: higher-rate springs, recalibrated shocks and thicker front stabilizer bar but with different exterior trim. They also had simulated hood scoops, red-stripe tires and bright trim moldings. The performance engines available included three, 396 CID V-8s. The SS396 series lasted from 1966 through 1968 before being relegated to an option package in 1969. Convertible competition to this Chevrolet in 1966 included Buick’s Skylark Gran Sport, Dodge’s Coronet R/T, Ford’s Fairlane 500, Mercury’s Comet Cyclone GT, Oldsmobile’s 442 Cutlass Convertible, Plymouth’s Belvedere II Convertible and Satellite and Pontiac’s GTO Convertible. Even after more than a half-century, Chevelles are still wildly popular as icons of the burgeoning Muscle Car Era. With its clean lines, convertible top and big-block power, plus four-on-the-floor, you can’t go wrong with this ’66 Chevy. Stop by MotoeXotica Classic Cars today and check it out for yourself!
