The fuel-injected, 2.4-liter boxer, six-cylinder engine was factory-rated at 190 horsepower, which demanded a stronger transmission than the early Type 901 “dog-leg” box. The newly developed Type 915 provided much stronger internals and a new shift pattern, with the first gear on the same plane as the second rather than being offset to the left. The dry-sump oil tank was moved ahead of the right-rear wheelhouse to provide better balance. Forged lightweight Fuchs 15-inch alloy wheels became standard on the “S” models, with rim width increased by half-an-inch to six inches. The Targa’s heated glass rear window, introduced as an option in 1968, became standard equipment the following year. This was not an inexpensive car for its day; the list price for a base 911 S Targa was $10,230. The stunning 1972 Porsche 911S 2.4 Coupe featured here is finished the most sought after color combination of special order Silver Metallic over an incredibly well preserved black interior with factory optional sport seats. This particular example was completed in May 1972 and was subsequently sold new in August 1972 by Porsche-Audi Manhattan to its original owner who cared for and sparingly drove the 911S for 44 years! This highly optioned example is equipped with highly sought after sport seats, engine compartment light, rear bumper guard and seldom seen dealer installed air-conditioning. After ownership was relinquished by the original owner in 2016 a complete $4,600 service was performed by a German auto specialist and less than 50 miles have been added since. Both period and recent service records corroborate the low mileage and the accompanying Porsche Production Specifications certificate confirms that the numbers matching 190hp 911S engine and 5-speed transaxle are still in place. Additional incredible documentation includes over 30 years’ worth of registrations and insurance cards in the original owner’s name, original maintenance record book (with service stamps from the delivery inspection and the first service), original plastic warranty card and more! Simply put this is one of the finest examples to be found on the market today in terms of low mileage, originality and accompanying documentation.
