Every once in a while, a car comes along that makes you STOP and STARE!!! This 1965 Silver Pearl roadster with gorgeous red leather interior is that car. The first L78 396CI 425 HP Corvette rolled off the assembly line on March 19, 1965 and this exceptional example followed on April 13, 1965. It was born with that game changing 396 cubic inch 425 horsepower solid lifter powerplant and came with the M21 4 speed transmission, power steering, power brakes, power windows, 3.55:1 positraction rear-end, F40 special front and rear suspension, K66 transistor ignition system and tinted glass. The drivetrain and all components are numbers matching. The NCRS shipping data report (copy available) verifies this Corvette was produced on 4/13/1965 and delivered to Harvey Chevrolet in Chagrin Falls, Ohio shortly thereafter. It was found (literally in a barn) in Mentor Ohio in 2015 which is about 25 miles from Chagrin Falls. I purchased this car in 2015 and started a complete frame-off restoration to the highest standards. During that process, I took some poetic license and made this Corvette “mine”. We followed the trim tag paint code with the highly desirable Silver Pearl paint (factory pack lacquer), but I chose red leather seats as opposed to the trim tag designation of red vinyl. This is an AO Smith body, per the trim tag, and therefore should be a rear exhaust car. I chose NOS sidepipes during the restoration as I believed an L78 should be given every opportunity to breathe. If the new owner wanted this to be an absolutely accurate example of this awesome car, they should change the seats to red vinyl and the exhaust should be changed to N11 Off Road Exhaust System. The 1965 Corvette had 3 options for tires: blackwall, whitewall and goldlines. I chose to put redlines on the new reproduction knockoff wheels to compliment the red interior, and it does indeed. I received so many compliments on this Corvette, I decided to have NCRS (The National Corvette Restorers Society) judge my car. I chose not to flight judge it due to the sidepipes, leather seats and redline tires, but instead to have it Concours judged. It scored the highest possible score of 100 points (scoring sheets are available) and validated what I already knew – I had a very special Corvette. I’ve started a new project (another barn find Corvette) so it’s time for this one to find a new home. I’ve put 800 miles since the restoration on this beautiful car going to car shows, NCRS regional and Chapter meets and parading around town with my best friend, my wife. It looks like new, drives like new and turns heads everywhere. I have a car lift and can photograph anything you may wish to see. I have more pictures, NCRS Concours judging sheets, car show trophies and can answer any questions. I have the original owner’s manual (picture available) and a terrific example of the original window sticker. I am obviously not a dealer – my cars are my passion. My motto - It’s more fun to see your retirement sitting in your garage than in your bank account! |
