Too often it is applied, in a rather epic stretch of creative license, to battered and dented vehicles that are as beat up and poorly presented as a discarded old shoe. But that doesn’t mean charming patina doesn’t exist, and it can be devilishly difficult to define appropriately. Still, like Supreme Court justice Potter Stewart once famously said about pornography, we all tend to “know it when we see it,” and this lovely original Series III has it. (Patina, that is. Not pornography.)Presented in its original factory color of Bahama Gold with a Limestone tropical roof, with black bumper and beltline trim, it is a proudly kept survivor. An 88 that has been used as a Land Rover should be used, but never abused. Not a garage queen or the subject of a recent restoration, it wears the weathering, wrinkles and faded scars of its years in the stylish, elegant way an aging leading man might. The way we all hope to do as we get older. And yet these years don’t detract from the appearance, they add to it, with the type of wabi-sabi grace and dignity that makes us run our hands along the flanks and smile. Like you, I know Land Rover patina when I see it, and this is proper Land Rover patina. The wheels have been replaced with new white NATO models wearing 235/85-16 Cooper Discoverer STT Pros, the fifth mounted up on the bonnet as the Land Rover gods intended. The interior has recently benefited from newly upholstered seats front and rear, and the (useless?) third front seat has been removed in favor of a new center console incorporating a cubby box and dual cup holders. The chassis is straight and rust free, reflecting a lifetime of gentle but regular use in an arid Spanish clime, the original miles are low and documented, and the mechanicals are excellent. It has real charm this 88. Real style. What's it like to drive? With low original miles and a fresh service, it drives exactly as a Land Rover 88 should drive. Torquey, flexible and potent, with a gearchange as precise and mechanical as the action on a Luger Parabellum, accurate steering and strong brakes. It fires from cold with minimal warming of the glow plugs, idles smoothly with no undue smoke or clatter, and underway it accelerates with commendable power and precision. The clutch and related hydraulics are all new, fluids and filters have all been changed, and it has recently passed the stringent Spanish ITV inspection. Suspension bits and bushings are all healthy, fluids are fresh and clean, and the electricals all work as intended. It’s ready to go anywhere you want to go and ready to do anything you want to do. It needs only new chapters in its history written.
