12/58 1959 Double Cab This was the first year for factory built double cabs and this is one of only three known that were built in 1958. Recent extensive metal work including rockers all around, lower nose, rear corners and battery tray, right front roof section, and right front floor. The side gates are original seamed gates and have also had the lower channels and hinge points rebuilt. The rear gate is a Klassic Fab replacement correct for this year of bus. The original gas tank bulkhead divider panels are in place. Has original seat pedestal and seats, repro mats front and rear and recent new interior panels by Clara. The seats appear to have been recovered in black basketweave some time in the distant past. The original speedo was cleaned and lubed and had the needle replaced with a correct clear needle. The radio is a conversion of an old Blaupunkt by Tayman Electrical, basically a modern radio innards that are still controlled by the stock knobs. It previously had Safari windows but they were neither original or correct for this bus in addition to being too leaky for this rainy climate, so I took them out and welded the dash holes shut. It still has the Safari antenna. The front bumper is correct but I believe the rear bumper should be truck specific for this year, I’m not sure though. Maybe the bus trivia specialists can weigh in on that. Taillights are original glass, both cracked but complete. Front suspension is a stock length beam with the larger ’64 brakes and 3 1/2” drop spindles. At the rear is a straight axle conversion with type 3 rear brakes. Transmission is a Rancho freeway flyer with 3:88 R&P. Wheels are stock bus 15’s but they have random incorrect date codes. All hubcap clips have been replaced. Tires are Continental Engine is 90.5 X 78 2007cc with Dell 40’s. I have the original receipt from the P.O. that can provide a little more info I also have original receipts for other major components, suspension and drive train. The Volkswagen museum birth certificate shows a build date of 12/16/58. Originally a dove blue bus with one repaint in CB over SWR. Options M016, M020 Speedo MPH, M090 Laminated glass, M176 Overriders, M018 and 163 can’t be identified. This bus has been my daily driver/work truck for the past 14 years. I live on a small island in South Florida so I don’t rack up a lot of miles. This was an unfinished project of the previous owners so it had been in storage since the original engine build, pretty much zero miles on it when I got it. I also have a box of spare parts, mostly related to brakes. Multiple sets of brake shoes front and rear, replacement wheel cylinders, some NOS wheel cylinder rebuild kits, some return springs and assorted other nuts bolts and hardware. This is a running driving fully sorted bus, though there are a few minor details that could be attended to. This would be a great starting point for someone to take it to the next level with paint or roll it as is. All of the hardest work has been done. Please call for any more details. |
