ORIGINAL OWNER ONLY 14,410 ACTUAL MILES FROM NEW WELL-DOCUMENTED SERVICE HISTORY, ORIGINAL TITLE Stunningly Beautiful Carrozzeria Touring Spider, 1 of 3433 Built Numbers-Matching Twin-Cam 2.0L and Fully-Synchronized 5spd Manual VIN: AR773-273-8257 We’re selling this drop-dead-gorgeous 1960 Alfa Romeo 2000 Touring Spider on behalf of a local gentleman, the original owner! This car has resided at a tremendously impressive lakefront estate in Evanston, IL since new, having been owned by a significant collector of fine art and furniture. Having lived a privileged life of heated storage and perfect-weather-only cruises, this car has covered just 14,400 miles in nearly sixty years of ownership. Last road registered in 2009, the car was mechanically gone-through in summer of 2019 in preparation for the sale. Please see the end of this listing for a summary of the service records that will come with the car, as there are quite a few. As it sits now, this is a clean, dry, well-documented, one-owner, truly beautiful example. Talk about a perfect Sunday morning Cars & Coffee goer! Exterior: - Please see the video along with the listing, as the car is shown in detail. Blemishes are all shown close-up, though there are few. Imperfections to be aware of: There are two screw holes at the bottom of the trunk lid, as the owner had actually mounted his “60ALFA” license plate directly to the trunk lid, as opposed to rigging up a bumper mount. There are a few minor chips scattered about the car. Rubber around the taillight lenses is dry. Headlight lenses have been replaced and are USA-derived, fogs and taillights are still the original Carellos and are in excellent condition. - This car has been repainted once in its life. The car will come with a receipt for the job, but a bare-metal repaint in the same color was carried out at Rolf’s Foreign Repair of Evanston, IL in 1987 at a cost of $4700 at the time. Paint presents phenomenally well considering it’s over thirty years old. - Panel fitment is spot on, and the doors open and close very nice and smoothly. Windows roll up and down smoothly. Boot cover fits perfectly. Black convertible top was replaced in 1989 and remains in great shape. No punctures or significant signs of age. - Polished surfaces are all in nice shape. There’s the tiniest bit of pitting on the original chrome pieces, but it’s by no means glaring. Still a mirror-like finish. See video for close-ups of it. - Glass and light lenses are all clear and crack-free. Lights and signals are all functional. - Wheels are in great shape, with no oxidation or damage. Polished hubcaps have a couple little dings, but overall look very nice. Correct Michelin tires are older than would be ideal, but have not seen much for mileage. No dryness or observable wear; this car has been kept in climate-controlled storage and the rubber hasn’t visibly aged at all. Interior: - Again, please defer to the photos and video, as the interior is shown in detail. - In 1989, Rolf’s Foreign Repair (same place that did the paint in ‘87, still in business today) reupholstered the front seats in black leather, dyed the door panels, and replaced the carpet. $2600 at the time. The car retains its original Carrozzeria Touring floormats (front, rear, trunk) and they remain in excellent condition. - Dash top shows its age a bit by way of some pitting and peeling. The original motorsport provenance plaque is still inlaid in the dash, which reads, “ALFA ROMEO, the car with the oldest and greatest racing experience. World Champion 1950-1951.” - Gauges are all functional. Odometer is functional and reading of 14,405 is known to be accurate based on well-documented single ownership and service records. Original Veglia instrumentation, 140mph speedometer and 8k-rpm tachometer. This car has no radio and no air conditioning. Mechanical / Underbody: - Please take a look through the underbody photos, as the car is documented in detail. Underbody is quite good. The car was undercoated when it was painted in 1987, and it was a nice, dry car when the undercoating was applied. No through rust, just little bits of surface scattered throughout. All original metal, no patches. Pretty impressive condition for a 60 year old, Illinois-since-new car. - The car runs beautifully and sounds fantastic. As you will note in the summary of service records, this car saw a fairly thorough going-through in the summer of 2019 in preparation for the sale. Having only covered two hundred miles in the last thirty years (last road registered ten years ago), the car was due for some sorting. While the car was thoroughly serviced this year, the front brake on the driver’s side has begun to hang up a bit, so the car will hook left under braking. It is driveable as-is, but that front brake should be adjusted before the car is thoroughly used and enjoyed. Aside from that, and an exhaust/heat shield rattle at idle, there are no tendencies or noises of concern. Clutch was done this year, all fluids were flushed, and the fuel tank was drained and cleaned. Suspension is nice and tight, and the car shifts smoothly. Very much feels like a 14k-mile example should. Service Records: 1987 (Evanston Import Car Centre, $1400, 14,243 miles): Replace tires and balance. Remove, refinish, and install fuel tank. Clean fuel lines. Install new sealing rings. Repair fuel tank straps. Drain fuel tank, replace plugs and wires, tune. Bleed clutch and brake system. 1987 (Rolf’s Foreign Repair, $229): Install custom differential hangar. Lubricate driveshaft and front end. 1987 (Evanston Import Car Centre, $288): Steam clean engine. Flush cooling system. Replace all coolant hoses. Replace water pump. 1987 (Evanston Import Car Centre, $1220): Rebuild brake and clutch master cylinders. Replace wheel cylinders. Replace brake shoes. 1987 (Rolf’s Foreign Repair of Evanston, $4700): Repaint entire car. Strip, repair where necessary, paint. Clean/polish/buff all chrome. Reconstruct moulding clips. Undercoat undercarriage. 1989 (Import Service Inc of Evanston, $792, 14,263 miles): Replace oil pan gasket. Rebuild brake master. Replace valve cover gaskets. 1989 (Rolf’s Foreign Repair of Evanston, $2600): Recover front seats in black leather. Dye door panels and rear area as necessary. Make vinyl boot. Furnish and install carpet. Install black Stayfast cloth convertible top. 1995 (Mel’s Auto Repair of Evanston, $244): Replace brake master cylinder, bleed system. 2019 (SLK Autohaus of Orland Park, $7311, 14,401 miles): Drain fuel tank and flush fuel system. Clean and adjust carburetors. Rebuild distributor. Replace spark plugs, points, rotor, condenser, cap. Replace plug wires. Replace drive belts. Replace fuel filter. Replace air filter. Rebuild front left and right wheel cylinders. Replace front right brake line. Replace clutch slave, master, and hose. Remove and clean throwout bearing. Flush clutch and brake system. Flush cooling system. Replace rear pinion seal and change rear diff oil. Replace battery. With any further questions, requests, or to discuss purchasing, please reach out to Jake at 773-273-8257.
