1970 Ford F100, VW TDI 1.9 Engine 145,000 miles on engine. Toyota 5 speed manual transmission. This is not a junkyard cobbed up installation. This conversion was properly engineered and designed to propel this truck at 80 mph and still get 33 miles per gallon of diesel. Let me break this down front to back. The cab and body wiring/fuses is of course original, the VW Engine retained its harness, computer, relays and fuses which receive power from the ignition key and direct battery for starting. The gauges that work are direct reading under dash, OIL Press, Batt volts, Water Temp and Fuel Quantity. The speedometer cable is broken, had a custom one made, Toyota gear drive off tranny to Ford speedo connector. We made it too long and it didn’t last 2 years. Could be fixed. The engine is mated to a Toyota 5 speed transmission with a bell housing adapter plate. Everything aft of the engine is Toyota flywheel, clutch, throwout bearing, slave cylinder and starter. Standard Toyota 21 spline output shaft and front driveshaft ujoint. The driveshaft is custom built slightly shortened and balanced and retains the Ford ujoint at the rear end. The rear end ratio is 325:1 so it is pretty fast in 5th gear which is OD. It really didn’t need a 5 speed but for long interstate runs it lowers the engine RPM and there is plenty of torque to keep it there. The engine is 1.9 TDI or turbo diesel injected, the cooling system is all VW and nothing else has been modified from the original install except the hoses and intercooler location. The VW air conditioning evaporator and fan are also fitted under the hood but custom hoses will need to be made to get it to work, I have manufactured a distribution box inside the cab for the cooling air and it blows hard, just no AC yet. It starts great even in very cold weather, cycle glow plugs twice and it fires right off. The truck never had power steering or power brakes, and yes they are drums. The front end was professionally aligned by a Ford truck Guru after cutting 4 inches off the front coil springs to lower it due to the decreased weight on the front axle with the giant V8 removed. There is a new 18 gallon fuel tank behind the front seat.Overall this truck drives fantastically, a lot like the old 300 six cylinder but with just a bit more HP and a lot more torque, it does get down the road being a turbo as well. Very reliable, has been my daily driver. Had one relay fail and a belt tensioner over past 6 years. Regular oil changes and service. The body is starting to rust again after 6 years in places, it is impossible to kill it. The tailgate is rusting from the inside out, gonna say it needs replaced at somepoint. Still have enough leftover paint for that job. The bed seams were completely cleaned out treated and resealed with aircraft grade epoxy seam sealer, again the rust there is coming back from the inside. Even with the rust get a lot of attention from all the FORD Truck lovers out there, and there are a lot, could have sold this 3 times at gas stations refueling when I first completed it. One guy waved cash at me, just couldn’t do it. Moving on now, doing this same engine install in a 22ft Starcraft boat, keeping me busy. More pictures available if interested. Ebay would only allow 24. Feel free to call me if you need more details. Gary 316 285 5831 |
