1976 Dodge AW100 Ramcharger Soft-TopSerial #A10BF6X096854HISTORY:When Willys introduced a civilian version of the Jeep after World War II, an entirely new class of vehicle, the “sport utility” was created. It essentially combined the attributes of a station wagon and a four-wheel drive pickup truck into a single package. Although the concept was slow to take off, by the 1960s other manufacturers began to produce SUVs of their own, beginning with the International Scout in 1961. Ford followed in 1966 with the Bronco as did GM with the Chevy Blazer and GMC Jimmy in 1969. Chrysler was relatively late to the game, but in March of 1974 they introduced the Dodge Ramcharger and the similar but slightly less prestigious Plymouth Trailduster.During development Chrysler’s SUV was known as the “Rhino” and to cut costs it used mostly existing components It was built on a shortened Dodge AD pickup platform which had been introduced in 1972. The 1974 Ramcharger was initially available only in four-wheel drive, but a rear-wheel drive version came out the following year. Additionally, until 1980 it came without a roof leaving buyers to either opt for either a dealer installed fabric top or a removable steel hardtop with a flip-up rear window. It was not until midway through the first model year that fixed window frames even appeared on the doors. The Ramcharger was marketed as a basic utility vehicle in which only the driver’s seat was standard equipment until 1976. Even in this Spartan form, the Ramcharger was well received and over 15,810 were built the first year along with 5,015 Traildusters. The subject vehicle (#...96854) is a 1976 Dodge AW100 Ramcharger soft-top; one of 12,101 built that year. This first-generation example has four-wheel drive and is powered by Chrysler’s LA series 360-cid V8 rated at 175-hp. Along with an optional larger engine it is equipped with a TorqueFlite automatic transmission.CONDITION:Good paint (white accent below the beltline) showing surface scratches and minor chips throughout. There is noticeable cracking at the top of both A-pillars, where the soft top attaches. Very good exterior trim and brightwork exhibiting few scratches or dents. The windshield and door window glass is in similar condition with no major chips, and good rubber gaskets. The white vinyl bucket seats are in good condition, with one visible split in the lower right corner of the driver’s seat. The door panels are also in good condition exhibiting some wear and discoloration on the armrests. The black vinyl dash is intact and in very good overall condition, although the clear plastic gauge lenses are cloudy. The undercarriage is very clean and appears free of major leaks.
